Earthquake swarm activity increases in Reykjanes ridge volcano

Since early this morning (18-May-2020) earthquake activity has been increasing in Reykjanes volcano. For the last several weeks there has been a deflation taking place in the volcanoes from Krýsuvík (possibly) and to Reykjanes volcano. Such event is to be expected with a rift volcanoes (see Krafla volcano 1980 – 1984 eruptions).

Other than this minor activity it has been quiet in Iceland for the last month. This happens regularly in Iceland. This quiet time might last a while longer.

Please remember to support my work with donations. Support is still needed when things are quiet in Iceland. Please see the pinned article for more details. Thanks for the support. 🙂

  1. Hi Jon, Hope and pray all is well with you. Any news about the Katla Eruption Disaster Exercise? Cannot find a write up about it.

  2. I found the notice on “exercise”, just wanted to read Iceland’s Emergency Management paper on this particular exercise-the “why/purpose/goals” and learned lessons usually found in the After Action Report. Any idea where I can find that?

    1. I don’t track the exercise information or reports about it. What I do know is that they run this exercise because of air traffic and possible problems in connection with it.

  3. I notice that one can’t comment on your seemingly endless pleas for donations and then in your latest donation post (May 28) you state: “I didn’t plan on working this summer but this is what I need to do and this is what I am going to do.”

Why weren’t you planning on working in the first place? It would be much better for you to have a job than constantly begging for handouts. Why do you chain yourself to handouts when you could be free and make your own way in life?

    1. Look you selfish asshole. Writing is work, its a lot of work. This articles just don’t appear out of the thin air. I also monitor earthquake and volcano activity in Iceland all day most hours of the day even when I am outside. This is all work and takes time. Getting a second job makes it difficult for me to work on this website expect on the weekends.

If this bother you so much. Just stop reading my website. I’m sure there are some other websites where you can pour down your misery to and make people hate you.

You also must hate people that write books, news paper articles and other work of writing with this attitude of yours.

You are not required to read my website if this bothers you so much you can simply leave. You also must hate all the people on YouTube, asking for a support with Patreon or other from of support they get to make their content.

All articles have 14 day time limit on open comments because of risk of spam.

      1. No need for the trashy language, name calling and false assumptions but hey that speaks volumes about you and not me.

By the way there are many long periods of time that go by and you write nothing other than the verbiage of begging for yet more money so please don’t try and make excuses that you are constantly writing on here.

Try becoming a responsible adult with a real job for once in your seemingly miserable life, heck you might even like it !

      2. I don’t have any reason to be polite to people that are in fact nothing but rude to me and behave like idiots. You’re just playing the victim here when you are in fact not the victim.

Iceland has quiet periods and that has always been like that. Quiet period are from 2 weeks and up to 2 months. When that is there is simply nothing to write about.

If you don’t like my website, you can simply leave. You don’t have to read what I am writing about volcano and earthquake activity in Iceland. I also suggest that you stop watching YouTube because creators there (like CGPGrey that only makes 1 to 3 videos a year) work is mostly based on support from donations (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/CGP_Grey).

You made a baseless accusation. I don’t have any reason to be nice and just let people like you do this to me.

Donations to my work is also just something if people want to do. If they don’t, they don’t donate. Its not that complicated.

  4. No offense but you do seem to NEVER work. And you are ALWAYS having some excuse why you need money, why you need the help. It does make you look bad. AND his is long been before the Covid-19 pandemic so you cannot use that as an excuse. So I suggest that unless you are getting paid to watch for those earthquakes, that you stop and let the professionals do it. What you do is called a hobby. That’s all. Time to put away the hobby and work. I’m sure Iceland has plenty of paid proffesionals who do it so you could take that time to work so you don’t need to be asking for money every day. Secondly, you dont seem to have much content in your writing anyway. Its mostly stuff that is already said else were by the professionals or you just say “I don’t know” Cheers!

    1. Most of science is stuff that is not known. This includes geology. But I don’t expect people like you to know about such things. Go and make misery somewhere else.

You claim that I make excuses, but you don’t provide any examples of your claim so its is dismissed.

      1. No need to provide excuses… you provide them yourself with nearly every “blog” you post. You always have some sort of financial issue and if anyone looks for proof I only need to direct them to what you write in your “blog”. I’m sure you are a nice guy, and think you are doing a service. But you are not, you should stop pretending to be a geologist. There are professionals that get paid to do that service. Go find a job. I know that means taking you away from your precious geophone but that is what mature people do. They work. They do their hobbies on weekends or on holiday. Stop asking for handouts.

      2. It’s called having a low income in a expensive country and also having to pay debt, taxes all at the same time with this impossible low income that I get monthly as a welfare from Iceland (country). I never pretended to be a geologist, that’s just one of your lies you use to justify your view on me.

You don’t need to read my website so why are reading my website? Go away, because I don’t want the likes of you around here.

The term is also science communication. I’m also a citizen scientist. Both are terms that I doubt you know.

  5. Lets face it Jon, you have been begging for money for years. Years! Anyone who would like to fact check this statement need only to go look at all your “articles.” You moved, then moved again, then again. Call me a liar but this is what you said at various times in your blogs and each time you asked for money. Also, are you telling me that each country you moved to is equally rampant with extreme low incomes? I think not. Sadly nothing has changed and you still offer nothing but sad excuses for why you have no money. You are finding excuses to justify yourself asking for handouts. For years you have done this! I would have thought something would have changed by now. So go ahead and continue to lie to yourself but you are sadly only fooling yourself. What I see, and what I believe many others have now come to see, is a man that has a head too big to understand that what he does is worth very little in the real world. My opinion is that you are too lazy to actually find a paying job and so you use your “Citizen Science” excuse as a reason to sit in front of your PC all day. (which as I saw many times, you need donations to help maintain your PC.) Allow me to dumb this down for you since you feel so strongly that your knowledge is so superior that something so simple as finances escapes your grasp of understanding… Frankly all you are asking for is for everyone to support your hobby. I love photography and I need a new camera. Perhaps I should start claiming I take photos of birds for science and ask for donations to support my work! See how silly that sounds? Yes indeed… very selfish indeed. You are selfish. Now grow up, get a job and become a man in the real world. And no, I feel I should like to police your website for more future donation requests. I think it is my duty to warn others of this scam you are running. Talk to you again soon! Cheers!

  7. I realize you threatened to toss my comments into the trash bin but the truth is that you will still read this…. Now I never called you vulgar names. Nor did the gentleman I followed into this discussion. For that reason I chose to screenshot these discussions in the event you decide to pretend these discussions never happened and delete this thread. I’m sure you see that I have been civil so please refrain from using bad words in return. It does not become you. Thanks Jon.

    1. You must hate YouTube then and then media sites like RawStory (if you read them) and all current content creators on YouTube since if we apply your insane logic to them, are just lazy people that should get a job.

I have a better idea. You stop reading my website and then you don’t have to see me asking for donation to run it and maintaining it. Eruptions happens regardless if you are reading my website or not. You can just read about them in some other news media. I don’t need or want people like you on my website.

  8. As it happens, I started following you a few years back. I didn’t know much about volcanos but I found them fascinating. I then found groups like Volcanocafe and countless other Facebook pages that offer far more in depth reading then your shoddy blog. I soon started to realize that much of what you do as “writing”is simply copy and paste links and explain what was already explained in those links. I saw on Facebook that you claim to have such high esteem in the volcano world that Europe reaches out to the Iceland Met when you begin to worry. I sincerly doubt that or otherwise your grubby hands wouldnt be reaching out so often for funds. Jon you truly have tricked yourself into thinking you are something you are not. I feel bad for you. Truly, I do. And your intentions, while they may have in the beginning, been well intentioned, have now become fraudulent in nature. The charade has gone on too long now. Your work is nothing more then copy and paste and to me, that is a scam. You are telling people you are important and back it up with flimsy “articles” and hope you get donations. You must start to see that Jon. Tha is the reason you get attacked so often. This is a scam! You are tricking people out of their money to support your hobby.

    1. Volcanocafé is a website that deals more in fantasy and stealing data outright than in science. I use the news when appropriate as does every other website out there.

Please, go read the other websites if you dislike mine so much.

You’re also asked to fuck off.

  10. I checked Volcanocafé and they don’t have a single word about what is currently going on in Iceland. Not a single word! Nothing, zero. The other websites that I know of are not providing any information on what is currently going on in Iceland so you are wrong.

  11. Yikes. I have a question relevant to finances that is slightly on topic; although it is not intended to berate or belittle Jon.

Jon, you mention your webhosting costs are “$235/month ($2820/year) that I am currently paying.”

What website’s do you have that require so much bandwidth?
I don’t see any content such as large video/image files, or steaming apps in the few blogs i have perused which would require a dedicated server ; unless i’m missing something?
All of the websites appear to be wordpress blog software which isn’t a resource/bandwidth hog.

$235/mo is excessive, and nearly 2x the cost of current basic dedicated server pricing. Is it truly necessary?

You could pay less than $200/year with a service such as dreamhost for all of your websites.

What is the driver for needing a dedicated server? Is there that large an increase during an Iceland eruption? I am always wary of overselling, you may not actually need it, regardless of what some webhosting salesmen says. I have lived the dedicated server route when one of my sites was very popular, but that was from larger image/video files combined with traffic and it was only ~$50/month. Once that website (and web forums in general) lost traffic to social media I was able to switch back to a VPS for ~$170/year, rather than $50/month.

Getting into a better hosting scenario with reasonable pricing would immediately help your finances. I’m sure you know this, but thought I would chime in after I read your note and was shocked by what you currently pay. That is practically a car payment in the US.

    1. The problem is when a eruption happens then traffic spikes up to 100.000 page views a day (Europe uses . not ,) at the start of the eruption. My current hosting provider does not allow this on cheaper hosting packages, that is VPS and when they had shared hosting that is not offered any more. I always got warning emails during the traffic spikes. Part of the problem was that last year cpanel increased its price by a lot, it did go from cheap to $45 a month for my dedicated host. That has remained a problem. My current hosting provider is also getting more expensive (this is Hostdime) and that is been a problem for a while.

I am going to move to a cheaper hosting soon. Currently I am resolving remaining issues when it comes to my websites on the transfer side. That hosting is shared and considerably cheaper and I’m just going to place CloudFlare in front of it to handle all traffic spikes. I hope to drop the cost down 70% to 90% from current price that I am paying. If I can go full shared hosting the price is just $119/year or $9,91/month (sign up offer). I’m still working out details. Its either going to be fully shared hosting or a VPS hosting. I am currently resolving the payment details and few other details on how to move the websites.

The price of the VPS hosting is $89/month or $1068/year. I am not sure on the payment details here. That provider is going to be 1984.is soon as I can hear from them. I need to save on transfers so I have to move the websites my self, if I have them do this the cost is $50 pr website.

Do it your self VPS hosting costs just $5/month cheapest and can go up to $80/month most expensive. I don’t know if I can use that because I am not good enough system administrator on many sides (email, dns and such). I am looking into it however and I might well use that if I can learn the details better. If I have to, I’ll just learn how to manage the website on do it your self VPS.
