Yesterday (20-November-2021) an large earthquake swarm started in Reykjanes volcano. This earthquake swarm is rather large, with 217 earthquakes recorded so far. Largest earthquake had a magnitude of Mw3,5 but other earthquakes have been smaller in magnitude.
This earthquake activity suggests that magma pressures in the area is increasing quickly since the eruption in Fagradalsfjall mountain stopped three months ago. The inflation that has been measured so far is in the range or above 2 cm at the writing of this article. Since the earthquake activity is increasing it is clear that in next few weeks to months earthquake activity is going to increase on the Reykjanes peninsula until next eruption happens. The largest earthquakes are being felt in nearby towns.

It’s curious if the two eruptions are connected to a broader trend of new activity on the peninsula. It’s entirely possible Atlantic/European rift extension is at a point that will activate more magmatic activity on the peninsula as a whole for some time to come. There have been many theories that Fagradalsfjall was just a tiny burst of what is to come.
