Update on the eruption in Fagradalsfjall mountain on 5-June-2021

There has not been a lot of change in the eruption during this week (28-May to 5-June) in the eruption of Fagradalsfjall mountain that might be part of Krýsuvík-Trölladyngja volcano system.

  • The crater continues to get bigger. The crater grows by collapsing on the inside and expanding it walls following that it seems. Current height of the crater is 300 to 500 meters. This is a bad estimate based on web camera views.
  • The main viewing area is now cut off from walking people because lava has flowed over the lowest point on the walking path.
  • There is now a risk because of the overflow over the walking path that the western barrier is going to be breached soon.
  • In general the lava doesn’t travel far but it builds up close to the erupting crater and is now at locations hundreds of meters thick.
  • If the eruption continues as it has been doing the whole area is going to go under lava in next 6 to 10 months. As the lava just keeps building up.
  • There are no signs that this eruption is ending.

There are no other news about this eruption that I know of. It continues as it has been doing since 19-March-2021. In other parts of Iceland it has also been quiet or minimal activity not worthy of reporting.

This article is a little late because I was dealing with headache issue for the last 12 hours.

  1. Western wall was breached around 10 am local time. Lava from Geldingadalir through the pass and lava coming down along side “Theater hill” from the main vent have over taken the wall. Guess Iceland Met had a cam down by the wall, and mbl.is cam back up, and the fog lifted enough to see the lava moving down along the hill.

    1. Moving quick. They have been re-laying the fiber optic cable along the main road. I believe they’re going down 2 meters with it now. YT vid from GunTog showing the work last week. Not sure that would even be deep enough as hot lava built up over any area would raise the temp pretty high in the ground. Maybe engineers think that will be enough, tho.

  2. Looks like the lava is doing what it does. Advance quickly at first, then slow down and pile up behind, then burst forth at some point, only to slow down again. Current path above subject to change, as well. Lava has lots of choices above on where it wants to go on any given day.

  3. It seems people have had to withdraw from low areas close to the advancing lava due to high gas levels.

  4. The reason for lava pile up is that its cooler faster than it can move forward. This eruption doesn’t have energy for anything more.

  5. Today, Monday 7 June, the crater seems to have a wall now where the main outlet channel was, so that the lava has to rise to a height before it overflows the crater. Watching on a mbl.is webcam this morning I saw movement and a helicopter land on Theater Hill, then I found a mbl webcam apparently filming from there-

    1. Yep, I was hoping someone would take advantage of that locale now that people aren’t going to be there. Great view!

  6. Change in eruptive activity yesterday, but seems to have returned somewhat to what it was before. I’m waiting for big bursts to start flowing over all sides of the crater with the crater lava lake being so high up now.
