Little connection to the internet 15th – 29th of April, also broke

Since I’m moving back to Denmark I’m going to be without any internet connection in the days between 15th to 29th of April. I might have some limited internet connection during that time, but nothing that I can use to write articles or continue to monitor earthquakes activity.

Any activity in that period can be posted in comments to this article. I’ll try to make a new short article before the comments close automatically after 14 days.

Donations

Please remember to support my work (I’m broke). It is also expensive to move like this and I don’t know at the moment when I’m going to get a job in Denmark. It might take few weeks until I get a job. Thanks for the support. 🙂

Moving to Denmark, also broke

I’m currently in the process of moving to Denmark. My plan is mostly going as I thought it would do. With one minor exception, I’m having less money then I expected due to the computer failure I had about 1 month ago. That did cost me around 50.000 ISK (355,69€, 405,68$, 2.649,15 DKK). That is a problem for me and continues to leave me bit broke. Any support is welcomed, or the rest of April is going to be rather difficult for me. This was not my original plan, since I had saved up for all the transport cost and some extra on top of that. But then the computer had to fail and since I can’t be without computer I had to buy a new one the cheapest way possible. I did that, but I still have a shortage of money when it comes to transport cost due to this.

This month, donations are needed if people can afford them. I know that not everyone that reads my website can afford supporting me with donations, but that is not a problem for me. [Added] If I don’t get a lot of donations I’m going to have a problem buying food all of April. Due to how things did go when it comes to the money problem that showed up (and I didn’t like it).

Advertisement changes

Few months ago Amazon allowed me to start in Amazon CPM advertisements. The difference from the normal Amazon advertisements is that I get paid per view of this website, rather than just sales as the old Amazon advertisements have had. For this reason I’ve moved most of my advertisements to Amazon CPM. This should bring more targeted advertisements to people that are looking for stuff to buy, even if that is not what people come on this website for. I won’t get any huge amount of payment from those advertisements at the moment. I also get payments if people buy something from those advertisement, under normal commission from Amazon U.S. Amazon CPM advertisements is not an option for the UK, DE, FR and Canada advertisements at the moment. I don’t know when they are going to start there. Until that happens. I’m also going to run normal advertisement that just pay when people buy something trough them.

The reason why I don’t have Google Adsense advertisement is simple. They have video advertisements with audio and video. They also have advertisements with audio only and that is just not acceptable in my view. For that reason I won’t have Google Adsense on my websites. There is also all the Google Adsense red tape that follows it. I am however going to have them on my YouTube channel, once I’ve set that up again.

Article schedule

I am going to have rather good internet connection or at least some internet connection until 14-April. Until that time I can post articles here. Once I’m in Denmark I won’t have internet connection until 29-April. I might be able to write some short articles in that time, since there is a library in the town that I’m moving to. But access to it might be limited (I’m not sure). If anything happens I’ll try and cover it, but I might not be able write about it right away, depending on the situation I’m at the time.

Please note that I won’t be on Twitter while I’m moving to Denmark. Just on Facebook.

Please remember to support my work (donations for March specially needed)

I put a lot of work into this website. It mostly happens when something is going on in Iceland, earthquake swarm or an eruption. But between those times things are quiet in Iceland the traffic to this website drops down to few thousands of page views a day.

Donations needed for March

I was hoping to keep things decent in March, but that didn’t work out properly since things cost in Iceland. I am also trying to save for transport cost of my belongings back to Denmark from Iceland. I say trying because I don’t think its going well at the moment. Money wise I hope that things are getting better for me, at least part of my debt is getting lower at the moment, while I had to increase it other areas (a little, not a big problem in the long run). My biggest problem in past few days is the fact my computer died and I had to replace it (I just buy the motherboard, cpu, memory and video card. I also had to buy new dvd drive, old one had died last summer). That was expensive, even if I choose as cheap computer parts as possible, leaving me with a budget hole unexpectedly when it comes to my transport costs of my belonging. I’m now trying to figure out a way to cover the transport costs without any problem. It is going to be a tricky thing to do on my low income, but I think its mostly doable. Any support in that direction is welcomed, along with support to help me survive March without running out money for food (since I really dislike using my savings for food).

I wish my financial situation was better then it currently is. I’ve been trying to make progress and I have made progress, but it is slow, but improvements are being made. Once I’m back in Denmark the financial situation is going to remain a little difficult, but it is going to improve with time and effort on my part to improve it. The thing also is that many websites and youtube channels ask for donations (many also have sponsors) so they can make more content for people to watch. When I write about earthquake swarms, or the latest activity in volcanoes in Iceland, or posting updates every hour or two when an eruption takes place (that is hard work).

Plans in the works

I am looking into that to create a website about technology. That would cover computers (PC), mobile phones, televisions and other thoughts on that matter. Currently I am only looking into it to see if that pays off, or if I should find something else to write about when things are quiet in Iceland. Increasing my range might increase my income (maybe not). Since I am also good with technology of all types and size, since I’ve been doing that for as long as I’ve been working and thinking about earthquakes and volcanoes.

Book writing

I am also going to continue to write books and short stories. Since I just can’t be without it. I’m not sure when next short story comes out on Amazon, but I am working on few stories, both short and long in my head.

Moving back to Denmark

I’ll be moving back to Denmark on 14th April. That makes me happy. More details on this later. The Bov geophone station is going to start operation soon after 14th April, not sure on exact dates at the moment.

Please remember to support my work with donations

I put a lot of work in this website. While it’s not the most visual stunning website on the Internet, I try to keep it informative and to the point. This is a lot of work and like so many other websites on the Internet I have to get paid for that work somehow. While I do have social welfare from Iceland it’s currently not enough to cover my costs, don’t worry, my budget status is getting better by the month but this is also a slow progress. I won’t be debt free until July-2019 at current rate. Until that month, things are going to be a little difficult for me to keep decent budget while in Iceland, its going to be a slightly better in Denmark (cheaper).

My finances are going to clear up in about three years time. After that I’m implementing a total ban (for my self, I don’t care what other people do) on all bank loans in Iceland (but not in Denmark or Germany [details below on Germany and Denmark(1)]). Ban on other types of loans might also be implemented at the same time (buying phones and such, unless in a emergency). The goal is to clear up payments so I stop being broke all the time, since being broke is no fun and never has been. I’ve learned my lesson in this, but its going to be a difficult time until the clean up is finished and every loan I currently have is paid back.

The reason why my website has simple graphics and not heavy image based articles is simple. I don’t like doing so. This also increases the load time of this website if I would go all graphic as some websites have done in past few years. Such changes would also increase the workload on the sever side and I don’t want to do that, since when a eruption or something happens in Iceland the traffic increases to this website tenfold and sometimes more. It would also increase bandwidth usage by a log and I don’t want to do that either.

It is my view that I want quality over quantity. For that reason I only write about activity in Iceland when something is going on. When it is quiet in Iceland I don’t write a lot on this website and that’s good too, since it allows me to do other writing work that I’m doing, be that stories or writing on some of my other websites (like Spacewatch). Things have been busy in Iceland since 2014 and I don’t think its going to quiet down a lot until sometimes after 2024. But Iceland is now entering period of high volcano activity that might last for up to 80 – 120 years (more details here). This means I’m going to busy for many years writing about Iceland volcanoes and the activity connected to them.

If people are wondering what I get from the Amazon Advertisements it has not been a lot, but the new Amazon CPM advertisements are slightly increasing my income. At the moment I do not get more than $42 a month from Amazon (at the current rate I have my CPM at the moment). For sales I rarely get more then 25 – 40€ paid out every other month (or equal in pounds for Amazon UK). For Amazon U.S I have payment set at 200USD (for the moment), at current rate I should get payment every 2 – 3 months from Amazon CPM advertisements (it is going to take longer for the sale part to get up to 200USD). Amazon also pays out 60 days after the month I reach the minimal payment threshold. I don’t plan on adding Google Adsense back to this website, the rules Google (Alphabet) are difficult, it also pays worse than Amazon (based on what I’m seeing at the moment).

I hope this article didn’t bother too many people. Thanks for reading.

Footnote 1

The reason why I don’t ban loans in Denmark or Germany is that loans in Denmark and Germany have decent policy on payments and interest rates (this is not the case in Iceland). There is also a wider option then just expensive overdraft loan from the bank, as is the case in Iceland. Besides overdraft loans in Iceland, there are just credit card loans available in Iceland and they are not much better then overdraft loans when it comes to interest rates and such details. I’ve also come to the conclusion that loans, in general are a drain on once finances. Besides a loan to buy a house sometimes in the future, I plan on staying away from them view few minor exceptions. One of those exception is the fact I need to get a loan so I can pay the insurance for an apartment in Denmark, but the interest rate is decent and first five years don’t have to pay any interest at all (the total time for the loan is 10 years, half of that time has 4,5% interest rate). The loan is with the multiplicity, not a bank.

Bárðarbunga volcano update 03-Januar-2015

This is out of sync update of the eruption in Bárðarbunga volcano. This website was dealing with technical problems when it was moved to a new server. I hope that has all been resolved now. This new server should be more responsive than the server I used to host my website on. This was sudden move between servers, but it had to be done since the traffic to this website was overpowering the server I was using and my website had already been suspended once due to this.

Bárðarbunga volcano update

The eruption continues in Holuhraun around the same rate as before. During the Christmas time there has no travels of scientists going to the eruption area. The main lava field is now around 83 kmÂł in size according to latest reports. This number changes frequently.

Largest earthquake during the past 24 hours had the magnitude of 4,6. Number of earthquakes in that same time period was 50 according to the news. Pollution from the eruption continues to create problems in Iceland depending on wind direction. Yesterday and last nigh the pollution did go up to 900 μg/m³ in Egilstaðir and up to 2400 μg/m³ in Höfn in Hornafirði. Wind was rather strong during that time (I think) so the pollution did not stop for a long period of time or build up.

Other discoveries

Scientists have discovered that dyke activity in BárĂ°arbunga volcano appears to be creating new layers of crust at depth. I don’t have the details on this , I did see this in the news few days ago, but I lost the news about what this is exactly about. I hope to get more details later about this.

Donations

Since I had to move to a new host, the cost for me with this website has gone up. The cost of just running the website is now $135 a month. Any donation to help me with this cost and more are welcomed, it is also possible to support me by using Amazon advertisements that I have by buying from Amazon what you need. Thanks for the support.

Bárðarbunga volcano update 28-November-2014

This is going to be a short update.

There has been a lack of reports in the news today of the eruption in Holuhraun today. Web cameras show no major change in the eruption far as I can tell. The lava field is now getting thicker as is clear by this images (text is in Icelandic) where the lava is overflowing from older lava (1 – 3 month old). Far as I know the pulse behaviour continues, I don’t know to what extent it has been, or if it has changed from original observations of it.

Largest earthquake for the past 24 hours had the magnitude of 5,1 and happened in north-east part of the caldera. Where the most of the large earthquakes happen in recent weeks. I am not sure why that is. According to measurements that where taken yesterday the total caldera subsidence is now around 50 meters, there doesn’t seems to be any change taking place in rate of subsidence. At least that has not been covered in the news or reported far as I know. The reason why GPS signal is now longer being received is that the GPS station is now so low that it is out of line of sight for the relay station it uses to forward the signal. This also means IMO is not getting any signal from the seismometer located in the same area as the GPS station. This is according to latest report on activity in BárĂ°arbunga volcano. Far as I know there is nothing else to report.

Donations: Please remember to support my work with donations or by using Amazon to buy stuff for Christmas. Thanks for the support.

Moving back to Iceland: Next week I move to Iceland. This means that the last update before I move is going to be on Monday 1-December-2014. I don’t think that I have time to write update on Wednesday 3-December-2014. After that the update schedule is a bit of a mystery. Once I have my things from Denmark I am going to start regular updates as I am doing now. I don’t know for sure when I get my stuff, I hope it won’t be no later than 22-December-2014.

Bárðarbunga volcano update Monday 3-November-2014

The eruption in Holuhraun continued last weekend as it has been doing for the past two months. No change happened. Due to bad weather this weekend it was difficult to monitor what was happening in Holuhraun. The eruption continues at full force from what I can see on MĂla web cameras, when I was viewing it earlier today I noted that lava strokes where going up 20 – 50 meters high up. The main crater has build up around 90 meter high wall around the main eruption, blocking all view to it. I don’t know how stable this wall it, so collapses might happen in it at times without warning.

Largest earthquake during the weekend had the magnitude of 5,4. Other earthquakes where smaller, but there was a lot of earthquakes that had magnitude larger than 3,0. This high volume of strong earthquakes continues in BárĂ°arbunga volcano, so far more than 61 earthquake have been larger then magnitude 5,0, more then 228 earthquakes with magnitude 4 – 5 have happened since this started and more than 434 earthquakes have happened in BárĂ°arbunga volcano since August. The amount of magma that has erupted in Holuhrauni lava field is now 1,0 kmÂł (or more). The new lava now covers 70 square kilometre area according to last measurements that I know of. The eruption in Holuhraun is still fourteen times smaller than Laki eruption that happened 1783 – 1784. Far as I know there is currently nothing more to report.

Bárðarbunga volcano daily update for 22-October-2014

Donations: Please remember to support my work with donations or by using Amazon to buy stuff or streaming service from them. Thanks for the support. 🙂

Bárðarbunga volcano eruption in Holuhraun has not changed much from yesterday. Latest news however say that the eruption in Holuhraun is slowly coming to an end. When that might happen is not known, there is less lava flow today then two weeks ago. Activity in Bárðarbunga volcano is far from over and I am expecting new eruption starting at any time with no warning at all. There is also no major change in the GPS data as can be seen here.

141022_2125
Earthquake activity today in Bárðarbunga volcano. Green stars show earthquakes with magnitude above 3,0. Copyright of this image belongs to Icelandic Met Office.

There is no longer any point for me to mention the largest earthquakes today. Since there happen magnitude 3,0 – 4,9 earthquake every one to three hours at the moment and earthquakes with magnitude above 5,0 every 20 – 30 hours. People wanting to check magnitude details can do so on Icelandic Met Office website here. Any large earthquake also appear clearly on my geophones, the website for those can be viewed here. Other then this I don’t have any new news about what is happening in BárĂ°arbunga volcano. The day to day changes are not great as I have mentioned earlier.

Update 1: Rúv News has published a news about new estimate from Icelandic Met Office if an eruption happens in Dyngjujökull or in the river area of Jökulsá á Fjöllum. New estimates are that 25,000 cubic meters per second of water are going to flood down Jökulsá á Fjöllum in such eruption and are going to reach Holuhraun eruption and lava field in about 30 minutes. The news can be viewed here with graphics, both language and text is in Icelandic.

Other:
Due the fact that the eruption in Holuhraun and activity in Bárðarbunga volcano is almost the same now between days I am going to write fewer articles about the activity in Bárðarbunga volcano. The reason is that I want to get a little rest before the next chapter in Bárðarbunga volcano activity starts and I find it is difficult to report always the same thing almost every day. I am going to keep the daily update format until Friday and from Monday I am doing to update every other day, this means there is going to be update on Monday, then on Wednesday and on Friday. Unless something major happens then I am going to update soon as I can do so.

Donations needed for August

Please remember to support my work with donations. I currently don’t have enough income from social welfare in Iceland to pay for food and other things after I have paid all my bills. This has been a issue for me now for almost a year and while I am living in Denmark it is not going to change, at least while I am living on social welfare from Iceland.

What is also a issue when it comes to Iceland is the endless change in the exchange rate of Icelandic Krona (ISK) against Danish Krone (DKK). When I move back to Iceland in December 2014 (as explained here) this issue is going to be over for me. I do plan on living in Denmark, in the Padborg area where I am now. But only after I have secured my income in euro with my e-book sale. I hope that won’t take more than 5 years (counting from 2015), but it might take me up to 10 years to secure my income that way.

Thanks for the support and understanding.

For those how want to buy my e-book can now do so on Amazon and Kobo (Kobo link here).

Donations needed for May

I need donations to make it in May. Since the bills are higher than I expected and my income remains low, same as it has been since always (being on social welfare [benefits]) is not a fun thing. Donations help me keep this website up and running. Donations also help me to keep monitoring Icelandic volcanoes and earthquake activity in Iceland, this also applies for monitoring for earthquake and volcano activity in Europe on my Europe geology website.

Amazon works in that way when people buy something trough the banners or the web-store I get 5 to 10% of the price of that product. Regardless of what is being bought. My eBooks that I have written can be found here, they are sold with the eBook publisher Kobo Books.

Update: Due to some bill changes at the electronic company I am now going to have major billing issue this month. Since my income from Iceland is not nearly enough to cover all my bills and then to buy food all of May. I got some food in the freezer from last month, but that is only going to last so long. So please donate if you can. Currently I am seeing up on major money issue this month.

1/4 update: The reason why this is that in March I got the idea to buy cable subscription from Yousee (Danish cable tv company). I did enter all the numbers in the calculator and did all the maths to see if I could afford to buy the basic and smallest package from them. It turns out that I was wrong, wrong and more wrong. I got the numbers all wrong and the first bill was way higher than I expected. This is an contract that I have to pay for 6 months so I can not cancel it until end of September-2014. As I fully plan to do. I am also never going to buy a cable subscription again (if its not part of the rent, as is the case in many places in Denmark. Its not the case were I now live). I am just going to use an antenna, since its free to do so and I get what I need on it anyway.

2/4 update: The electronic company was making changes to its bill system. So now I get one higher electric bill then usual. This means more problems for me I think in the terms of not having any money to buy food. This however in returns means that my next bill in June is going to be lower as for other bills until the start of the year 2015. When the first electric bill of that year is going to be higher, since this is some extra charge of 58 DKK (58 * 12 = 696 [close the actual amount that I now pay]) (or about) that they now charge in just one go, instead of being paid each month. All this is creating major problems with my money since I just have minimal income from Iceland and all fluctuation in my bills results in problems for me.

Thanks for the support.
