Minor dyke intrusion in Bárðarbunga volcano

From 20:10 to 20:14 UTC a minor dyke intrusion took place in Bárðarbunga volcano. This dyke intrusion was small, only lasting those few moments and the largest earthquake had the magnitude of 2,5. Other earthquakes are smaller. Depth was from 15,6 km to 23,2 km. Based on the location, this is clearly a dyke intrusion into Bárðarbunga volcano. It is too small to start an eruption, but suggest that magma processes in Bárðarbunga volcano are starting to increase again.

There is also a change in the SIL station Vonarskarð. What is creating remains unknown. This might be a change in hydrothermal systems under the glacier, but is impossible to know for sure at this point in time. Copyright of this image belongs to Iceland Met Office.

I don’t know if any more earthquake activity is going to take place in Bárðarbunga volcano. Since it is impossible to know what magma does next inside a volcano. At the moment I’m not expecting a eruption in Bárðarbunga volcano.

  1. I have noticed that in the past 24 hours there has been an increase in activity off the coast of Grimsey in the Tjörnes fracture zone.

It is all minor at the moment.

    1. Your quality was good. Not sure about 4k. And this isn’t even close to the hurricane force storm. Still neat video. I really like seeing other parts of the globe. Big thanks for that.

  2. I noticed this is in the same location which happened at the end of April. Is it possible another event could happen along the same line which previously happened in August 2014 ?

    1. This spot has had several dyke intrusion in the past. I’m not sure what is going on at this location. So far it has remained at depth (more than 10 km) and has not changed. That however might not mean anything at all in the long term.

  3. There is something going on in Bárðarbunga volcano. I don’t know what and I don’t see anything on maps yet, so I won’t write about it just yet.

  4. There is now a earthquake swarm in Bárðarbunga volcano. I don’t think it’s a large one. I’m going to write about it tomorrow if needed. Looks like a dyke intrusion is taking place, at least that is the highest chance of what is going on at the moment.
