Earthquake activity east of Grímsey Island (TFZ). Possible fake earthquakes in Eyjafjallajökull volcano

At 03:03 UTC an earthquake with the early and unconfirmed magnitude of ML3.3 took place east of Grímsey Island. This earthquake did take place on TFZ. It is possible, but this earthquake might be the start of an earthquake swarm in this area. But that is not uncommon pattern for earthquakes in this area. But however it also happens that earthquakes like this one takes place. But then nothing more happens.

Eyjafjallajökull volcano

There has also been some earthquake activity in Eyjafjallajökull volcano during the night. This activity is possibly false due to weather or faulty SIL seismometer. The earthquake that have been detected so far have extremely low quality. But the increases the chance of them being false, rather then real events. It is not going to get known if this activity is real or not until it is reviewed by seismologist at Icelandic Meteorological Office.

Eyjafjallajökull volcano has been quiet since it’s eruption in the year 2010. I do not expect that to change any time soon. Since it seem that Eyjafjallajökull volcano eruption cycle is around 150 to 500 year (theoretical maximum in my opinion). So I am not expecting anything to happen in Eyjafjallajökull volcano any time soon. If this earthquake activity is confirmed it is interesting. What might come out it is impossible to know for sure.

Deep earthquake in Eyjafjallajökull volcano

On 11.09.2012 at 10:24 UTC there was an deep earthquake in Eyjafjallajökull volcano. The magnitude of this earthquake was 0.8. It had the depth of 14.9 km. But that is among the deepest that happens in Eyjafjallajökull volcano. But before and during the eruption of Eyjafjallajökull volcano in the year 2010 the most depth of earthquake detected at that time was around 30 km.

I do not expect this earthquake to mean anything. This is just single earthquake that now happen from time to time in Eyjafjallajökull volcano. But after the eruption in the year 2010 there has almost been no earthquake activity in Eyjafjallajökull volcano.

Even if there are now two years since the eruption in Eyjafjallajökull volcano the local area continues to have problems with volcano ash from it. In certain wind direction the volcano ash is blown up and carried out to the sea. This wind direction is mostly when wind is blowing from north and does not carry any snow or rain with it. So today and maybe in next few days. The local people that live in the area around Eyjafjallajökull volcano to live in ash cloud from the eruption two years ago.

I did try to find an MODIS picture of this volcano ash storm. But I did not have any luck doing so.

More fine ash in the volcano ash cloud from Eyjafjallajökull volcano eruption then predicted (2010)

Rúv News had an interesting news bit about Eyjafjallajökull volcano this evening. It was about the eruption that took place in the year 2010. While Europe did not get a lot of volcano ash as expected. The amount of fine volcano ash in the air during this period was more then expected. A lot more according to a research into the ash cloud that happened in April 2010. This volcano ash is an danger to air planes and jet engines.

The amount of fine volcano ash was underestimated by observing satellites. As they did not see this volcano ash clearly or just not at all according to the news about this study. The amount of fine volcano ash in the air at the time was about ten times more then current model predicted during the eruption. This study did use data from 400 observing areas. The study it self is published in Scientific Report. I have not located this study as of yet.

I am not sure what this means in terms of the flight ban that was in the effect when the eruption took place. But one thing is sure. The areas that where considered free of volcano ash simply might not have been that in reality.

Use of radar to monitor start of a volcano eruption under an glacier

During the start of the volcano eruption of Eyjafjallajökull volcano in the year 2010. Use of radar images during the start of the eruption from it’s top crater provided valuable information on what was going on in the volcano. But due to weather it was close to impossible to monitor the start of eruption when it started in it’s top crater on 14. April 2010. The radar did allow sciencetist to monitor the formations of the ice cauldrons in the glacier and see how they did empty of glacier flood water in the start of the eruption. This allowed warnings to be issued in time for the population living close to Eyjafjallajökull volcano.

Marriage proposal on top of Eyjafjallajökull volcano yesterday

While for most people Eyjafjallajökull volcano eruption of the year 2010 was mostly doom and gloom because of air plain delays and closed air spaces. Something good did come out of it too. But something good did also come out of this eruption. But it is rare to hear of those stories. But this is one of those stories.

Rúv News tells about marriage proposal on top of Eyjafjallajökull volcano yesterday. But two and half years ago Catarinu Echeverri was on travel in Europe when the eruption in Eyjafjallajökull volcano hit Europe airspace. But due to mistake in flight booking just here friend did go to Venice on planned travel date. Because of this she was left stranded in Berlin. A man named Kay Kuehne offered here to stay with him for one night, but here flight to Venice the day after. Then the ash cloud from Eyjafjallajökull volcano eruption hit and she did end up staying longer with him then planned.

I wish the happy couple all the best in there future. 🙂

New pictures of Eyjafjallajökull Gígujökull glacier lava field

Rúv News has just published new pictures of Eyjafjallajökull volcano. The pictures are from Fimmvörðuháls lava field and the lava field that is in Gígujökull glacier. But in that area a lava flow did take place during the eruption. That lava field has not been explored before. According to the news, a moss has already started to grow on the new lava on Fimmvörðuháls. The Gígjökull glacier has already started to cover the lava field that did melt it during the eruption of 2010 in Eyjafjallajökull volcano.

New video of Fimmvörðuháls craters and lava fields

Rúv News continues to show small bits of the area on Fimmvörðuháls that did erupt last year (2010) with lava fountains and Hawaiian type eruption.

It has been over one year since the eruption in Fimmvörðuháls took place. But the lava fields there are still warm and steaming. But they also have there share of dangerous gases too.

New video of Eyjafjallajökull volcano crater

Tonight Rúv did show a new video of the Eyjafjallajökull volcano crater area. But the Rúv News team accompanied the scientist up too the top of Eyjafjallajökull volcano in order too view the crater that is there, and the lave field that did flow from the top crater. According to the news on Rúv it is going to take many years until the glacier recovers fully from the year 2010 eruption in Eyjafjallajökull volcano. As the lava field is up too 100 meters thick due the cooling from the glacier when it did flow form the crater in the eruption.

New measurements of Eyjafjallajökull volcano crater

There is a short news piece about Eyjafjallajökull volcano on the news web site Morgunblaðið (mbl.is). It is about recent trip that geologist took to Eyjafjallajökull volcano. They where monitoring and during measurement of the crater that did form on top of Eyjafjallajökull volcano during the eruption in the year 2010.

According to the news, the crater lake in Eyjafjallajökull volcano is now frozen and there is already 10 meter thick snow layer in the crater. While the lake is cold it is still dangerous do go down into it and people are advanced against to do so. Due to carbon monoxide that is on bottom the crater. While the bottom of the crater is cold, the same cannot be sad about the crater walls. But they are still steaming and the temperature there is from 70C and up to 95C not far below the surface. So this area continues to be dangerous to people and travelling into it should be done with care and not without an experienced tour guide.

The reason why they did go to this trip today was too estimate the area before more detailed measurements are done this summer.
