This morning (17-December-2018) an earthquake swarm started in Bárðarbunga volcano. Largest earthquake in this swarm had magnitude of 3,6. Other earthquakes have been smaller in magnitude.

This earthquake activity is a sign that Bárðarbunga volcano has not slowed down on inflating. I don’t know how much the inflation is since I have not seen GPS data for Bárðarbunga volcano in a while.

Thanks for your interesting comments Jon, I’ve learnt quite a lot from you and other contributors since first discovering your site. Will be interesting to see what happens with this volcano as I’ve never followed what happens as one inflates. Wishing you and the other contributors a very happy Christmas and a happy and healthy New Year.
Ongoing swarm around askja. Is this intrusion of fresh magma to askja or is this bardabungas work?
This looks like a tectonic earthquake swarm. It is known that magma is at depth there (10 – 20 km). If this is connected to any volcano that volcano is Askja volcano.
I’m not saying that’s not possible (that it’s part of Askja), but the fact that Herdubreid is on top of this ongoing swarm is not to be underestimated.
Magma is upcoming under Herdubreid since at least 2005, a pulse from around Upptyppingar into Herdubreid in 2008; today we see that magnitude goes up to M2.7 and depth up to 2.2km.
So a pocket of magma is around 2 and 10km depth. The tuya has been quite ‘loud’ this year. So in fact, nothing really special for now. What do you think Jon? Could there be an eruption in Herdubreid in the (near) future?
There definitely could be but the swarm would have to get WAY more intense before we see lava at the surface!
All the best of the season Jon

Is this just Bardy saying Merry Christmas or is this a prelude to something ?
More inflation. I’ll skip writing a article about this earthquake due to how frequently this type of earthquakes happen in Bárðarbunga volcano.
Also what is Lokatindur and is this a reawakening there?
Might have been a small dyke intrusion. It didn’t last long.
