Strong earthquake in Bárðarbunga volcano

During the night (13.March-2017) a magnitude 3,7 earthquake took place in Bárðarbunga volcano. This earthquake happens just few days after a strong earthquake swarm took place in Bárðarbunga (March 8th). There was no other noticeable earthquake activity following the magnitude 3,7 earthquake. Few minor earthquakes took place after the main earthquake.

It seems that magnitudes in the earthquakes that are taking place in Bárðarbunga volcano is increasing. The reason for this is inflation in Bárðarbunga volcano, it remains to be seen if this ends in a eruption.

Please remember to support my work with donations. At the moment I’m on what I call “scraping by budget” since I don’t have any money to do anything and I just make it. I expect my money situation to get better from July. I had to make few changes due to problems with billing (see earlier articles). Thanks for the support. 🙂

  1. I do get the feeling that something will happen sooner rather than later.

  2. Indeed Wurzel – more interesting rumblings near Herðubreið as well.

7.1 km 3.9 99% 3.3 km SE of Bárðarbunga seems like a lot of small quakes there and also looks like a swarm happening out near Herðubreið as well !

    1. 3D map of the Herdubreid swarm confirms a small intrusion under the volcano. Bardarbunga activity isn’t particularly notable, just seems that re-pressurisation is getting a bit stronger- after all it’s only fairly recently moved out of the post-Holuhraun phase. It will get much more noisy when the system gets close to critical pressure.

  4. Well now things are starting to get interesting! A swarm at Tungnafellsjokull to add to the mix. Herdubreid is at increasing risk of erupting.

  5. I’ll write about Tungnafellsjökull volcano earthquake swarm today and Herðubreið earthquake activity (two articles). At the moment I’m just estimating what is going on at both locations and that takes some time.
