Back to Denmark in the summer of the year 2012 (off-topic blog post)

This is a off-topic post. So feel free with off-topics thing in the comments.

One of the aspect about writing about volcanoes is that it depends on how you feel in the place that you write in. But for me as a writer that is a important aspect of my writing. I love writing about volcanoes and earthquakes, the monitoring data among other other things all related to volcanoes and earthquakes. But that is also important for me to live in the correct place so I can make my best work. This is not just about writing about volcanoes, but this is also important for my other book work that I am planning to write in the future.

The thing is however that place for me is not Iceland and never has been. It is a collection of many social factors I am not going to go into here in details, but the biggest reason is that in Icelandic culture writer are not appreciated as they should be on the public scene (and some types of work are not even put forward unless you got right connection). But I find that living in Iceland affects my work and even starts a writing block with me. For that reason it is important for me to do my work elsewhere then in Iceland. From what I gather my writing appears to work well in Denmark. It might also do so in other Europe countries. But so far my feeling for Denmark is good and for the moment I am going to stick with it.

For that reason I am moving back to Denmark in the year 2012. The exact date is not yet clear. But I have decided that I am hopefully going to move in June. At the moment that might change. But I find this to be a good target, as then I have been one year from Denmark since I did move first time around to Denmark in February in the year 2011 and back to Iceland in June.

I am plan moving to a town named Ringsted in Denmark. It is closer to Copenhagen then Sønderborg where I used to live. But trip with a train is about 35 min, rather then 3 hours and around 30 mins from Sønderborg. Around the time that I move. I plan to have for all the costs that I need to pay. Thanks to a computer work that I got. I should already have been covered the transport cost already (I have not yet been paid, so this is in the remains to be seen stage). The only thing that remains is the deposit for the apartment plus one expensive month without rental benefits in Denmark (since I am low income).

Status update to my blogs

In light of all this. I have decided that I am going to upgrade the status of my blogs to work, rather then just plain hobby. It is going into to effect from this blog post here in part. But it is going to full effect from 1. January 2012. How this is going to develop is a process that I am going work on all the time that I am going to write. But the average work on a blog post that I write here is about 1 hour and 35 min. But longer blog post can take up to 8 hours to write from start to finish.

This change suggests that I am going to have some income from this. That would be welcomed. But for the moment I do not have a lot of income from this work. Most of the income is from donations and advertisements on this web site. For the moment, that is not enough for the whole month. But with the social welfare it helps. But that also has its drawbacks for the long term. As income lowers my social welfare if it goes above certain amount. Now, that is all good with me if that income would be constant. For the moment, that is not the case. So how this is going to turn out is a good question. But I hope for the best when the time comes. For the moment however, my income from this is low and I expect it is going to remain so for the months ahead.

As for my plan on paying back my debt with the bank. It is going rather good. But it is going to go better next month, as I am only going to school this autumn. So I am hoping to be debt free before the new year comes. But if that happens remains to be seen.

On-topic snapshot

It is all quiet in Iceland. While that remains. I am writing this blog post to use the quiet time for something useful.

Thanks everyone for the support! 🙂

More new tremor spikes in Katla volcano

Yesterday and today there where two tremor spikes in Katla volcano. This follows a higher then normal background noise that I cannot directly trace only to wind as I did first think. What is going on is not clear, but it remains a bit of events just before the July 1999 minor eruption (suspected). But it has been speculated by scientist that event was related to inflation event deep inside Katla volcano systems. But the actual fact remains unclear. More information on the event in July 1999 can be read here (in Icelandic).

Pictures from the year 1999 of the harmonic tremor event in July that year.

There was also special note on this tremor chart here from skh SIL station (now gone). But in the year 1999 this signal was most clear on Snæbýli SIL (snb). But today this signal appears to be most clear on Goðabunga SIL station and Eystri-Skógar SIL (esk) SIL station. I do not know what the difference is. But it clearly is something.

Please note that all earthquakes have been cleared from this old SIL tremor plots.

Current day activity in Katla volcano looks like this on the SIL stations where it is most clearly seen.

Odd spikes can be seen here on this tremor plot. I do not know what they are. Copyright of this picture belongs to Iceland Met Office.

Hard to see spikes can be seen on Goðabunga SIL station. They are the same as from Eystri-Skógar SIL station. Copyright of this picture belongs to Iceland Met Office.

Same as above. But stronger then on Goðabunga SIL station. Copyright of this picture belongs to Iceland Met Office.

It is hard to know for sure what this signals means. But I am sure that this signals are going to mean something someday. But when is hard to know.

Earthquake swarm in Öræfajökull volcano sparks interest

The earthquake swarm in Öræfajökull volcano three weeks ago has sparked interest among volcanologist and geologists in Iceland. As the last earthquake swarm in Öræfajökull volcano was only the third earthquake swarm to take place in the last 20 years. But this was a subject of a news from Stöð 2 (Channel 2) this evening.

While a eruption is not expected any time soon from Öræfajökull volcano. It is clear that Öræfajökull volcano has started the long (?) path to a eruption (question mark, as we all know sometimes volcanoes just skip the long waiting part and go strait to the eruption phase as a surprise to everyone).

News about this from Stöð 2 (Channel 2).

Two earthquake swarms during the night.

During the night there where two earthquake swarms in Iceland. One of this earthquake swarms was man made.

The larger earthquake swarm was in Hengill volcano and was man made. It happens and the hydrothermal plant pumps down cold water into the bedrock and changes the pressure and strain in the bedrock and nearby sediments that make up this area. The earthquakes only happens when cold water is being pumped down into the ground. When they are not pumping cold water into the ground, no earthquakes happens. Largest earthquakes in this man made earthquake swarm where ML2.5 and ML2.2 according to automatic measurements of Iceland Met Office. But most of the earthquakes where less then ML1.0 in size.

The second earthquake swarm that did happen during the night was in Katla volcano. This earthquake swarm is no surprise to people how have been watching Katla volcano activity since July. This earthquake swarm in Katla volcano was however small during the night. But there did more earthquake activity in Katla volcano around 18:00 UTC yesterday. But overall it seems that Katla volcano has slowed down a bit compared to last few days.

For the moment it is rather quiet in Iceland, as there is currently not that much activity in Katla volcano. But that can change without any warning at all. As Iceland is highly active in both volcanoes and earthquakes.

New earthquake swarm in Katla volcano during the day

Today there was a new earthquake swarm in Katla volcano. This earthquake swarm was in the caldera of Katla volcano, same as the earthquake swarms that have happened inside Katla volcano since July, when this pattern of activity did start.

Current earthquake activity in Katla volcano. Copyright of this picture belongs to Iceland Met Office.

It has been few hours since the earthquake activity did stop in Katla volcano. If the pattern that has been ongoing for the past week and longer there should be a harmonic tremor spike in few hours time. But that it currently hard to know if this pattern is going to hold up or not. But I have every reason to believe that it is going to do so. For the moment, all that can be done is to wait and see what happens next in Katla volcano. At the moment, I have not seen any harmonic tremor spike during the day or at current time when this blog post is written.

More harmonic tremors in Katla volcano

It seems that Katla volcano is not as quiet it seems to be. For the moment the harmonic tremor seems to be small and only properly observable on one SIL station due to how weak it is at current time. So far two harmonic spikes have happened. This is most likely a hydrothermal system going crazy under the glacier close to Lágu Hvolar SIL station, rather then magma on the move (or at least that is what I think).

There has not been a lot of earthquake activity in Katla volcano during the last 24 hours or so. But that might not mean anything, as eruption can and have started without any warning at all (example: Grímsvötn volcano May 2011). So for now, it is more wait and see and more waiting it seems.

Magma on the move in Katla volcano

While the source of the harmonic tremor yesterday in Katla volcano is not immanently clear. It is has been concluded that magma is on the move inside Katla volcano. It has been suggested that the harmonic tremor yesterday in Katla volcano is a mixture of both hydrothermal activity and water flows under the glacier. But hydrothermal activity has increased in Katla volcano since July and seems to be continuing on that path for now.

The earthquake activity in Katla volcano has been growing since July, when a sharp harmonic tremor spike did take place and was followed by a glacier flood that did destroy the Múlakvísl river bridge. But that flood did peak at ~5 meter high.

Currently the activity is quiet in Katla volcano. But that might be because the earthquakes are not being detected by the bad weather that is currently in this area (and all over Iceland for the fact).

Here is a overview of the change in activity since Week 34.

The earthquake activity in KAtla volcano during week 36 (current week, last updated today 7. September 2011). Earthquake activity in SE part of Katla volcano continues as before.Copyright of this picture belongs to Iceland Met Office.

Current activity in Katla volcano is quiet (less detection due the storm is also a factor in this). But that can change without any warning at all and at any time. But there is no reason to scaremonger what is going on in Katla volcano. It is a fact of life and cannot be changed. So the best way is to prepare if people live close to Katla volcano, or if you live far from Katla volcano the best thing is to monitor and learn from what is now happening in Katla volcano. Scare tactics do not any good and serve no purposive at all and never done so.

Earthquake swarm in Krýsuvík volcano

Earlier today a earthquake swarm did start in Krýsvík volcano. This earthquake appears tectonic in nature from what I can tell on my geophone. This type of earthquake swarm is common in this area in Krýsuvík volcano. It does not mean that a eruption is about to start. But this area is a rift zone and it has many earthquake swarms during the year. This is just one of them so far. It is impossible to know how large this earthquake swarm is going to be or how long it is going to last.

The first earthquake swarm did start at 15:42 UTC, the second earthquake swarm did start at 21:53 UTC. That earthquake swarm is currently ongoing with several earthquakes every 2 min or so.

The current area of activity is a lake named Kleifarvatn lake. But that lake is on top of Krísuvík volcano.

I think that this earthquake activity is going to continue something into the night and next few days at the longest.

Most likely water creating harmonic tremors in Katla volcano (for the moment)

In the news from Rúv at 22:00 UTC it was sad that water is the most likely source of the harmonic tremors in Katla volcano. But it seems that hydrothermal activity in Katla volcano is increasing and melting the glacier. But for the past few hours there have been signs of hydrothermal melt water getting into Múlakvísl glacier river, making the river have more water then normal and increasing conductivity in it. This is not glacier flood as such. The cauldrons that formed in July have not changed according to this news, but it was not reported if they had actually gotten deeper or larger.

Due to cloud cover it was not possible to explore the north part of Mýrdalsjökull glacier. Just the south part. According to the news on Rúv at 22:00 new small cauldron have formed in the south part of Mýrdalsjökull glacier. They are shallow at present time and may have taken few weeks for form to present size (not sure how big they are), but among this cauldrons is a cauldron that has not been seen for past seven to eight years, cracks have formed around the cauldron and he has gotten deeper and water has collected in the cauldron. But with more earthquake activity and increased hydrothermal activity under the glacier. So more monitoring is needed on Katla volcano according to Magnús Tumi Guðmundsson volcanologist at University of Iceland.

Note: When I wrote this blog post. It seems that new earthquake swarm is about to start in Katla volcano. At least I think so.
