Earthquake swarm on Reykjanes peninsula (close to Fagradalsfjall mountain)

Yesterday (19-December-2018) an earthquake swarm started close to Fagradalsfjall mountain on Reykjanes peninsula. Largest earthquake in this swarm had a magnitude of 3,2. This earthquake swarm is ongoing as of writing of this article.

The largest earthquake was felt in Grindavík village, that is the closest to this earthquake swarm. Around 160 earthquakes have been recorded in this swarm.

  1. There seems to be a risk of a new large earthquake in Bárðarbunga volcano. There is increase in minor earthquakes now and that is sometimes a signal that a larger earthquake is going to happen. This doesn’t always happen and it is impossible to know when it happens (if it does).

  3. hello everyone . there has been a 5.4mag a Eiríksjökullt not too sure if this is a mistake or real quake, I never heard of this area before been watching Iceland for 10 years now .

  4. hi Jon . thank you . A 4.8 mag is that enough for possible for a eruption or too early to say right now.

    1. There is no magma movement on the tremor plots. If it was the red line on them would be going high up. That has not happened and that means no magma movement to the surface.
