New earthquake activity in Katla volcano

Early this morning (7-September-2016) an earthquake with the magnitude of 3,5 took place in Katla volcano. There was little earthquake activity before the main earthquake and after it, since this morning activity has remained low.

This earthquake activity is in the same area of the magnitude 4,9 earthquake two weeks ago. No harmonic tremor has been detected following this earthquake. I don’t know if anything more is going to happen. All that can be done is to wait and see what happens next.

    1. But it’s not over and it doesn’t seem to be the result of storm, wind or any kind of bad weather. It started on 6.09 and it hasn’t changed much since then. I think if it was the storm it should be clearly visible on other neighbouring SIL stations. On the other hand if it was harmonic tremor it should be visible somewhere else as well. So, maybe it’s just malfunction of Slysaalda station?

      1. That storm is over, a new one did come just straight after it. Welcome to Icelandic weather, where it often can be just storm after storm. Sometimes almost daily.

I think this year storm season (start of September until start of December) is going to be a bad one.

    1. This SIL station is high up, while other are lower in the landscape. That means more wind noise for the SIL stations higher up. Bad weather is expected for the next few days.
