Fresh minor earthquake swarm in Öræfajökull volcano

Yesterday (23-August-2018) an fresh earthquake swarm started in Öræfajökull volcano. This earthquake swarm seems to be progressing in the same way as earlier earthquake swarms. Earthquake activity in Öræfajökull volcano only happens when magma is on the move inside the volcano.

Largest earthquake in this swarm had a magnitude of 2,2 and the second largest earthquake had a magnitude of 1,9. Other earthquake activity has been as before and is mostly made of earthquake with magnitude 0,0 and up to magnitude 1,0. The magma in Öræfajökull volcano is slow moving and that is reflected in current earthquake activity.

  1. I suppose if the magma ever reaches the surface somehow that being slow will change?

    1. The gas in the magma is going to decompress. The result is going to be explosive eruption with all the problems that brings. This is not going to be a normal Icelandic lava eruption. When it happens it is not going to be tourist friendly in any way.

  2. Well, it’s not a background type of setting. Per the Smithsonian’s Global Volcanism Program in July:

“After a series of meetings between the Icelandic Meteorological Office, the University of Iceland, and Iceland Geosurvey, the Iceland Department of Civil Protection and Emergency Management stated on 13 July that Öræfajökull has shown clear signs of unrest for at least the past year and a half. The report noted ongoing inflation and increased seismicity, despite a decrease in geothermal activity since December 2017. The volume change since the beginning of the unrest was about 10 million cubic meters, likely from an injection of new magma.”

Thanks for your updates, Jon. I liked coverage of the big landslide earlier this year, too.

  3. Amazon US is closing down their advertisement CPM program by the end of September. Where I have been getting paid by page views. I guess the reason is that this program wasn’t profitable for them or they are moving to a new model (might be that. I am not sure).

That means I am loosing few dollars I’ve been getting in recent months as an income and I’ll be moving all the Amazon advertisement back to payment when something is bought with the Amazon banners I have. It is going to be a mixture of banners from Amazon US/UK/DE that I am going to have. This are the most used and bought from in recent years (Amazon FR/ES have 0€ income).

  4. My main earthquake computer has died due to a faulty capacitor on the motherboard. This means my website with the webicorders is not going to update while that is the case.

I am looking into what new motherboard+cpu+memory (16GB) + Windows 10 Pro are going to cost me. I have no option then to upgrade to Windows 10 Pro due to new security issues with Windows XP Pro that I have been running.

I hope to have money this month and time to fix this. But since I am starting the work at the slaughterhouse (from 07:00 – 17:00 or longer) I might not have time during the week to fix this. This also costs money and I do expect to be able to afford this this month, at least I hope so.

  5. This is going to delay a new earthquake computer. A repair in one of my tooth broke and I have to get it repaired soon (since I hate having a hole in one of my tooth). That is going to cost me some amount of money and I can’t afford both the repair and the new computer.

  6. Good luck, Jon. Tooth problems can be very uncomfortable….All quiet for now, all background noise….

    1. It has been quiet in Iceland in recent weeks. This happens. As for Öræfajökull volcano. Earthquake activity is in the range it has been in recent months, but magnitudes are slowly increasing but number of earthquakes during the week has remained about the same.

  7. Jón, slightly off topic, how are getting on with your tooth? Hopefully, you once again have a comfortable mouth and you will be able to afford your computer apparatus without too much delay.

    1. I’ll go to the dentist next week in Reykjavík. I am estimating that this is going to cost me some amount of money. I hope this isn’t a full root canal like last time this happened. Since I am in Iceland I now get 50% discount due to social welfare, but this might get expensive.
