Earthquake swarm in Öræfajökull volcano on 20-June-2018

Today (20-June-2018) a swarm of small earthquake happened in Öræfajökull volcano. Current earthquake activity is vastly different than what appeared during the months and weeks before the eruption in Eyjafjallajökull volcano. There was less earthquake activity happening in the months and weeks before an eruption eventually happened.

Largest earthquake in this swarm had a magnitude of 1,8 and all other earthquakes where smaller. Most around magnitude 0,5. Depth is 5 to 8 km at present time. In my view this earthquake activity suggests that Öræfajökull volcano is going to be a major problem in the future.

  1. It appears that the computer that ran Böðvarshólar geophone station is dead. It looks like a serious hardware problem and I don’t think its the power supply. If I can’t get it running again by replacing the power supply the computer is dead and I won’t replace it. The station is going to get upgraded to Raspberry shake station when I can afford it (the waterproof type of sensor, cost around $1400 USD with everything to Iceland) when I can afford it and at the moment I don’t know when that is going to happen.

What failed in the hardware is either the motherboard (most likely) or the power supply (maybe). If this is just the power supply I’ll have the computer back up and running in early july (I hope). It depends slightly on my money situation.

  2. Possible swarm taking place in Öræfajökull, earthquakes slightly larger than previous

  3. Crossing finger for you that its just the power supply, mine was thank goodness. Its getting busy in Öræfajökull again!

  4. Jon, Could you use a third hand dell portable? If so let me know and the address to send it to.

    1. No. I can’t. I am also going to upgrade my seismic monitoring network to Raspberry Shake hardware to get rid of bulky PC running Windows. Since they run embedded Linux it is going to be easier to maintain.

The problem is that I can’t afford this at the moment.

  5. Bad news about the earthquake computer for Böðvarshólar geophone station. The motherboard is dead due to blown out capacitors (and several bulging ones). This means this station is going to be offline until I can upgrade it to Raspberry Shake computer. I don’t know when that is going to happen because I can’t afford to do so at the moment and displaying gif image requires me to use my main earthquake computer to do so (since this software set-up is different from what I currently have).

This is due to the capacitor plague, https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Capacitor_plague
