On the 5th of January 2017 a magnitude 3,5 earthquake took place in Katla volcano. This earthquake happening in January is extremely rare thing, since Katla volcano is normally quiet this time of the year. That seems to be over for now.

This earthquake was the strong earthquake in a minor swarm that took place in Katla volcano during that day. Since then the activity has been mostly quiet. Bad weather is however interfering with detection of the earthquakes in most of Iceland, a storm is happening 1 to 2 days at the moment.

Is there any theory explaining why volcanic or tectonic earthquakes happening more frequently depending on what time of the year it is? is it a common thing?
This is (scientistic think) due to increase in glacier mass, that results in a increased pressure on the magma chamber that prevents activity from happening.
Do you know if the activity now in Godabunga today is a due to somthing brewing or a faulty sensor ? See the tremors chart for Godabunga at vedur.is. Sure looks like somthing is moving.
The other stations aren’t picking this up. Probably something has happened to this sensor. There are strong winds in the area at present.
Mark my words. Katla will blow this summer ?
There is a good chance of that. It might even happen early as spring.
What is the conductivity at? Suppose it’d give scewed results this time of year wouldnt it?
