  6. There was an earthquake over magn. 3 now at the Geysir swarm location: http://en.vedur.is/#tab=skjalftar

There were also around 70 more earthquakes at this location from midnight. The quake swarm has been active at the location now for some days, mostly at depths between 3 and 2 km, ie. rather near the surface. I remember that Jón thinks it is tectonic – could then be in connection with movements of the Hreppar Microplate, on the other hand, this is also part of the southern Langjökull Volcanic System with Prestahnúkuar as its central volcano.

  7. Funny night. Woke up at around 6:00 because the cat was At same time cat was behaving very strange, meowing a lot.

2 seconds later, I felt that familiar quite strong shaking wave of an earthquake. It wasn’t as strong as this April quake but at least it wake me up. I worried it was a big Bardarbunga quake but said to myself it was a probably a SISZ quake.

    1. I think that was the bigger Geysir quake you felt, Irpsit.

    2. Your cat shows typical behavior of animals before earthquakes, normally bigger ones. They can feel the tension (electrical load) just before the quake (humans can’t). Birds are flying like crazy, horses start to jump in the stable, ants running in and out of their burrow like crazy, fishes jump out of the water suddenly in larger amounts and more. They even use these signs for a probable earthquake security measurements education at school in Japan, as they have so many large earthquakes and this is the only possible short term prediction to have a couple of seconds to look for shelter or leave a building before the quake.

  8. Here is wishing all a very merry Christmas and a happy and prosperous new year! I also hope that this eruption goes on for some time so as to allow intensive study and investigation to further the knowledge and understanding of the volcanic systems under Iceland.

  16. Looks like a fairly large (but short duration) quake on the drumplots early this morning. This does not show on US Geo which picked up the 5.0 a few minutes before 11:00 last night.

  17. The Vadalda Mogt webcams have been good viewing for a while. The lava has finally reached the south view.

Wishing everyone season’s greetings and a New Year that brings health and happiness.
