Quiet period in Iceland at the moment

At the moment there isn’t much happening. This is one of the quiet period that regularly happen in Iceland. How long this break is going to last is impossible to know. It might be few more days and maybe several more weeks.

Currently the only notable activity happening is in Öræfajökull volcano but this is the same type of activity that has been happening for weeks now and do not require a new article.

Donations

Please remember to support my work. At the moment I am completely broke and I don’t know how this last week of March is going to be. I have updated the information on how to donate on the Donation site. The updated information can be found here. Thanks for the support. 🙂

  1. Left you a small donation, hope it helps a bit.

If I check the IMO website it seems that the activity near Grimsey in the Tjornes FZ almost completely faded away.
But I notice that small activity is still ongoing at Askja, near the 1961 site?
Surely there will be an eruption somewhere in the future there; is there a possibility that the lake on top (I guess that’s right above the shallow magma chamber) can contribute to the explosivity? Or has Askja the tendency to not erupt from its central crater?

    1. Askja volcano like Bárðarbunga volcano can erupt in dikes. An eruption doesn’t need to happen at the central volcano. A dike from Askja volcano can go south-west towards Holuhraun (Bárðarbunga volcano dike) or north-east and north (way north).

The geology map I have shows that Askja fissure swarm goes all the way up to Melrakkastétta and out in the ocean from there. I don’t know when a dike reached that far from Askja volcano, but at least not in recent times (1000 years at minimum).

There is also the volcano named Herðubreiðarfjöll in Askja volcano fissure swarm. It doesn’t have a GVP profile and I don’t know when it last erupted (nothing listed under Askja). That volcano possibly erupts magma like Askja volcano (not explosive).

Last eruption in Askja in 1961 was in the north part of the volcano a place called Vikraborgir.

      Thanks for the support. 🙂

  2. This quiet time might be short lived (a week). There is a earthquake swarm starting at the west end of SISZ just south of Hveragerði village and Selfoss town.
