All quiet in Iceland (at the moment)

Currently everything is quiet in Iceland, from midnight (UTC) there have only been five earthquakes recorded (automatic, the manual number is higher) and I’m not sure if any of them did have the magnitude above 1,0 (so far). It has been quiet in Iceland in the last few days, during a quiet time in the weather (no major wind). How long this quiet is going to last I don’t know. This type of quiet normally ends with a earthquake swarm somewhere in Iceland, sometimes they are big earthquake swarms and sometimes they are small earthquake swarms.

Due to how quiet it is I don’t have anything to report at the moment. What needs to be kept eye on are the normal suspect, Bárðarbunga volcano, Katla volcano and the fracture zones in north and south Iceland. Some activity might be happening deep on the Reykjanes ridge and north of Kolbeinsey Island (north of Grímsey Island).

  1. Hello Jón,

Don’t forget Askja in your regular line of suspects! A small swarm, but at a respectable depth (around 17 km)!
    Kind regards,

    1. Thanks for that. Askja volcano is preparing for an eruption, but for the moment its 10 years away at least. Unless Bárðarbunga volcano has other ideas.

  2. Due to a cable modem signal issue (Coax) I currently have a unstable internet connection (at times). Everything should work until tomorrow when a repair is planned (at least I hope the cable company can fix it tomorrow). The problem is not inside my apartment from the looks of it, it’s outside, somewhere in the signal path to my apartment.

I plan on moving to fibre on 1st of July. With new static IP address and more stable connection, at slightly less internet speed, just 90/90Mbps, not 300/60Mbps as I’m currently buying (but not actually getting at the moment).

  3. In between volc/sesmic, f you ever feel like it, I think it would be interesting to read a resume/summary about the current status underneath Myrdalsjökull.

  4. Minor earthquake swarm close to Hveravellir area (Langjökull north), most of the earthquakes are minor. I’ve recorded few on my geophone at Böðvarshólar, they don’t appear on the image due to how small they are. This earthquake activity does appear on the ste SIL station.

I’ll write about it tomorrow when my internet connection is stable again.
