Increasing conductivity in Skeiðará glacier river (Grímsfjall volcano)

Since 20-January-2014 there has been increase in conductivity in Skeiðará glacier river that comes from Vatnajökull glacier. The reason for this change is that water is leaking from Grímsfjall volcano. Water levels have also been increasing and dropping during this time since this started.

Conductivity is now measured at 416 µS/cm and according to Icelandic Meteorological Office that is an high value coming from Grímsfjall volcano. This water also goes trough several lakes and before it reaches the sensor at Gígjukvísl bride. So at the source of Skeiðará glacier river this value is probably even higher. No major earthquake activity and no harmonic tremor activity has taken place following this water leak from Grímsvötnum glacier lakes. But it appears that some glacier quakes might be taking place at the moment. Such activity can be seen here on IMO website. Currently the volume of water in Grímsvötn glacier lakes is small since the eruption that took place in Grímsfjall volcano in the year 2011. Coverage of that eruption can be found here. At current time nothing more is expected to happen.

Update on Hamarinn volcano activity

I did check up on the activity in Hamarinn volcano today. It turns out the earthquakes in that area are mostly glacier quakes, that means they are formed by the ice and are not real earthquakes as such. It is difficult to locate glacier quakes, it is also unclear why this glacier quake activity is taking place. There is a chance of glacier flood taking place soon, but so far nothing has been detected.

I am expecting more glacier quakes to take place in the next few days to weeks in this area.

Glacier-quakes and ice-quakes taking place in Iceland

In some parts of Iceland, mostly in the high areas of Iceland the ground is freezing over this time of the year. This is creating a lot of glacier-quakes and ice-quakes in Iceland. On Icelandic Meteorological Office earthquake maps this appears as earthquakes with extremely poor quality. Many of the earthquakes in and around Mýrdalsjökull glacier and Eyjafjallajökull volcano are glacier-quakes and ice-quakes.

So while it might appear as a lot of earthquake activity is taking place. That might not be true earthquakes. In this case, it is best to wait for reviewed data on this activity. To see what is real earthquake activity and what is not real earthquake activity.

Still no glacier flood in Skaftá glacier river

For reasons that are unknown. No glacier flood has yet taken place in Skaftá glacier river. Even if the western Skaftárketill cauldron in Vatnajökull glacier has emptied. It is now expected that Hamarinn eastern cauldron is going to empty it self soon. But when that might happen is impossible to know for sure.

The glacier flood is expected to be small. But it won’t go unnoticed once started. As the glacier river get’s darker and conductivity in the water increases greatly during the flood. I am going to try and keep an eye out for more information on this glacier flood.

Glacier flood has started from west Skaftárketill cauldron in Vatnajökull glacier

Yesterday an glacier flood started form west Skaftárketill cauldron. But that is an hydro-thermal area inside Hamarinn volcano (Bárðarbunga volcano system). The glacier flood is expected to be small. Last year in July there was also an glacier flood from this area of Vatnajökull glacier. But that was due to minor eruption in this area (it was poorly documented by scientists. I do not know why that is). But now it is melt-water from hydro-thermal area that is causing this glacier flood.

But glacier floods like this happen every 1 to 3 years from this area. Following this glacier flood an swarm of glacier-quakes have been detected in this part of Vatnajökull glacier. Flood in western Skaftárkatli might trigger a glacier flood in the eastern skaftárkatli cauldron. But it is not known if that is actually going to happen this time. It is not expected that current glacier flood is going to be a large one. But there is an risk of Hydrogen sulfide poisoning if people are close the glacier river during the glacier flood. So it is not recommend to go close to the glacier river due to this risk. The glacier flood is expected to appear from under Vatnajökull glacier in the next 5 to 6 hours. It is expected to last around 2 to 3 days at most.

It is believed that sometimes following this type of glacier floods from this area in Vatnajökull glacier there are small eruptions, or steam events as the pressure on the hydro-thermal system drops . That in turns allows for some magma movement that is powering the hydro-thermal system in this area of Vatnajökull glacier. It is impossible to know for sure if that is going to happen now. But it is good idea to keep an eye-out for such events taking place in Hamarinn volcano. Given the minor eruption that took place there last year.

I was seeing activity to November 2011 after the activity in July 2011.


One of the last harmonic tremor activity that I did see in Hamarinn volcano during the year 2011. But this took place on 7. November 2011. After this point it did go quiet. Copyright of this picture belongs to Icelandic Meteorological Office.

I do not expect any volcano eruption in Hamarinn volcano at this point. But such things are impossible to know for sure. As Hamarinn volcano has not been studied in details until after the year 2011 eruption.

Possible glacier flood from Grímsfjall/Grímsvötn glacier lake (Unconfirmed)

There seems to be a glacier flood did start this morning in Grímsfjall glacier lake. Based on the tremor, the glacier flood is already subsiding or something of that nature. So far this glacier flood has not yet been confirmed by monitoring scientists. So I am unsure what exactly what is going on. But current activity seems to have started around 13. June 2012, when the tremor changed from normal background noise to higher frequency noise. This can be seen on the SIL station from Grímsfjall volcano.

This harmonic tremor started early this morning. But it can be up to 12 to 24 hours before the glacier flood is visible in the rivers that flow from Grímsfjall volcano.

Until there is official conformation what is exactly going on in Grímsfjall volcano. It is bit hard to know exactly what is going on there at the moment. But I hope that it is going to be cleared up in the next few hours or tomorrow. There are no signs that an eruption has started in Grímsfjall volcano at current time. It is impossible to know if that is going to change following this events that are taking place in Grímsfjall volcano.

Glacier flood has started in Skaftá river

The latests news is that a glacier flood has started in Skaftá river. At the moment this glacier flood does not appear to be big, as there was also a glacier flood in this river last year. Because of this short time, there has not been a lot of water collected in the western cauldron that is emptying now. It was clear today that it was the western cauldron that had emptied when scientists did fly over the area earlier today.

This glacier flood is often early event and has been since the year 1955. Following this glacier flood there is often spike in harmonic tremor because magma goes on the move due to sudden pressure release in this area. So far it has not been able to trigger a eruption in Hamarinn volcano. It remains to be seen if that has changed or not.

Glacier quakes seen in Mýrdalsjökull glacier and Vatnajökull glacier

It seems that there have been few glacier quakes in Mýrdalsjökull glacier over the past few days. This glacier quakes are created by rain or some other movement in the glacier it self. This glacier quakes normally take place when there is heavy rain, or when the glacier is just moving because of water that is flooding below it. Sometimes glacier quakes also appear to happen around hydrothermal areas, but those might be harder to detect due to distance.

While not on the automatic earthquake list due how poor quality the glacier quakes are. It is still possible to see them on the tremor charts that Icelandic Met Office has on-line.

This glacier quake activity has also been taking place in Vatnajökull glacier. But the force for the glacier earthquakes in Vatnajökull glacier seems to be weather (rain and sun), rather then hydrothermal activity.

Other then this, it is quiet in Iceland. Both in earthquakes and volcanoes.

Glacier quakes in Vatnajökull glacier following a lot of rain

The quiet time in Iceland continues with few to no earthquakes. Besides the strong Mw6.2 earthquake in Jan Mayen Island (Belongs to Norway, regional to Iceland geological area in my personal view) there is nothing happening.

On the night of 25th of January there where ice-quakes in Vatnajökull glacier. This appears to have happened due to heavy rain in that area from the 21st of January. But that can make the glacier move suddenly and that makes the ice-quakes. Icelandic Met Office has some pictures of this activity.

A high detail of the ice-quakes. As can be seen, the ice-quakes look different then normal earthquakes. This is because ice is not as dense then rock and is under less pressure, and therefor breaks in a different way.
