Unclear what is going on in Grímsfjall volcano

It is unclear what is going on in Grímsfjall volcano at this moment. Harmonic tremor level continue to rise. They are currently way above what is normal for minor glacier floods from Grímsfjall volcano. This might be a minor eruption, or it might just be glacier on the move inside caldera. Whatever it is. This is not a strong event. As it only appears so far on only one SIL station. The one located on top of Grímsfjall volcano. Other SIL stations do not show any change so far. There is no earthquake activity in Grímsfjall volcano so far following this activity.

So far nothing there is no word from Icelandic Meteorological Office on what is going on in Grímsfjall volcano. I am also uncertain what is going on in Grímsfjall volcano at present time. But I am sure that is going to get clearer in the next few hours. The harmonic tremor level appears to be continue to rise. So it might get confirmed in the next few hours if there is an eruption in Grímsfjall volcano or not.

Minor glacier flood has started from Grímsfjall volcano glacier lake

A minor glacier flood has started from Grímsfjall volcano glacier lake. This glacier flood is expected to be extremely small. Since last glacier flood from Grímsfjall volcano took place earlier this year. That glacier flood was also small. Minor harmonic tremor changes have been taking place on Grímsfjall SIL stations. But they are not strong and can easily drown in wind noise. But it has been a stormy few weeks in Iceland.

I do not expect any volcano activity to take place following this glacier flood. As last eruption in Grímsfjall volcano took place last year and that eruption was the largest one in 140 years at least. But I am going to keep monitoring this activity and post updates if anything changes.

New hydrothermal area found in Steingrímsfirði, north-west Iceland

New hydrothermal area has been found somewhere off the coast of West-Iceland. In a fjord named Steingrímsfjörður. The exact location of this hydrothermal area is not known at current time. But it’s existence was confirmed by a rock that was found by a fisherman in the area. But it was captured by his fishnet.

The hydrothermal area is somewhere in this area out in the ocean. Exact location is unknown at present time. Image is from Wikipedia. Original copy can be found here.

Little is known of this area for now. But it is there based on the evidence of the rock formation. The water in this hydrothermal area is around 60 to 80C warm. That is a guess based on other well known hydrothermal areas close to this area.

Minor earthquake swarm in Katla volcano

Tonight around 22:30 UTC there was an minor earthquake swarm in Katla volcano. This earthquake swarm did last in about 20 minutes. After that the earthquake activity did drop back to normal background levels. This earthquake swarm is most likely part of normal autumn earthquake activity in Katla volcano. More earthquake swarms like this should be expected in Katla volcano during next few weeks.

What happens next is impossible to know. But I am not expecting anything special to happen in Katla volcano following this earthquake swarm. This earthquake swarm did appear clearly on my geophone at Skeiðflöt and Heklubyggð. The geophones can be viewed here.

Harmonic tremor pulse activity maybe in Hamarinn volcano

Today (02.09.2012) a harmonic tremor pulse did start in Hamarinn volcano (best guess) (Bárðarbunga volcano). This harmonic tremor pulses are intermittent and normally last for up to 20 to 30 min., at the time. What is creating them is hard to say. But this might just be hydro-thermal activity taking place in Hamarinn volcano. This might also be magma on the move inside Hamarinn volcano. But nothing is confirmed so far. I do not expect anything to be confirmed any time soon.

The harmonic tremor pluses appear on the end of the traces on this image. They are bit hard to spot for the untrained eye. But they appear as higher then background noise change in the tremor plot image.

It is impossible to know what this means exactly. But so far there are no signs of eruption in the area. This activity is less then activity in July 2011 that was created by an minor eruption in Hamarinn volcano. Stronger harmonic tremor pluses appear on SIL station at longer distance. But for now (when active) most of the activity only appears on SIL stations closest to the Vatnajökull glacier. I am going to continue to monitor the current situation. I will update or make a new blog post about what is going on if anything happens.

Glacier flood confirmed from western Skaftárkatli cauldron

Today (30.08.2012) an glacier flood was confirmed from the western Skaftárkatli cauldron. This glacier flood is small as expected. But it did take several days longer to appear from Vatnajökull glacier then expected. Some hydro-thermal activity in Hamarinn volcano (Bárðarbunga volcano) seems to be currently taking place at the moment. But some harmonic tremor spikes have been taking place in the past two hours.

Harmonic tremor pulse can be seen at the end of this tremor plot from IMO. It only lasted for about 30 to 60 min. Copyright of this image belongs to Icelandic Meteorological Office.

It might be that this harmonic tremor signals are coming from other volcano system then Hamarinn volcano. This type of activity has been seen before in Hamarinn volcano and follows glacier floods from it. Given the activity last year. I cannot rule out volcano activity taking place now in Hamarinn volcano. New episode of harmonic tremor is now starting in Hamarinn volcano. Based on early observations . It seems that current activity is behaving in similar manner as did happen in July 2011 when an minor eruption took place in Hamarinn volcano. If that is the case now remains to be seen. But it should be clear in few hours what is exactly going on in Hamarinn volcano following this glacier flood.

Fish dying in Kleifarvatn lake due to increasing toxic and hydro-thermal activity

According to Icelandic news today. Fish has been dying in Kleifarvatn lake. But Kleifarvatn lake is inside Krísuvík volcano system. The exact reason why the fish is dying is not known at this point. But report suggests that large amount of fish has been seen dead already. I do not know how much fish there is in Kleifarvatn lake.

This suggests that hydro-thermal and hot spring activity in increasing in the lake. This also suggest that increased toxic levels (for the fish) are now changing in the lake. What toxins are at work here I do not know. But it can be assumed that it is what comes with magma.

For the past three to four years. Krísuvík volcano has been inflating and deflating at regular time intervals. What this means in unclear at present time. But this is signs of increased activity in the volcano anyway. Hydro-thermal and hot spring activity has also been increasing during this period. This has also been followed by increased earthquake activity in Krísuvík volcano when inflation takes place. What happens next is impossible to know for sure. But it is clear that Krísuvík volcano is still far away from erupting any time soon.

Small glacier flood from Mýrdalsjökull glacier (Katla volcano)

According to Rúv News this evening. A small glacier flood started flowing from Mýrdalsjökull glacier (Katla volcano) few days ago. According to local farmer in the area. Glacier floods like this are common and several have taken place during this summer, none of them have created damage. The current glacier flood is from a glacier river called Leirá river. This glacier flood is from an cauldron somewhere close to middle of Mýrdalsjökull glacier. There is small risk of damage to local roads and fiber optics cable in the area. Some glacier breakage has been reported in the glacier where the floods comes from.

I am going to update this blog post if anything major happens with this glacier flood.

Update 1: It now appears that this glacier flood is now appearing on Rjúpnafell SIL station. So far just on this only SIL station. But that might change at any time if this glacier flood grows in size.

Short update on activity in El Hierro volcano, Canary Islands / Corto sobre la actividad de actualización en el volcán de El Hierro, Islas Canarias

This is just a short update on El Hierro volcano activity. I plan on making a longer blog post tomorrow when I am not so tired.

Current earthquake activity in El Hierro volcano is continues. The rate of earthquakes taking place in El Hierro volcano is about 10 earthquakes pr 1 hour. With high up to 20 earthquakes pr hour, and down to 2 earthquakes pr 1 hour. The rate of earthquakes with the magnitude larger then ML3.0 is about the same. They happen every few hours at random intervals. For the past few days a cluster of large earthquakes takes place every 10 to 12 hours. This pattern is not something to trust in, as it is going to change without warning. But it is controlled by inflow of magma at depth under El Hierro volcano. Most earthquakes take place at around 20 km depth, as that is where magma is being injected into El Hierro volcano. That however does not rule out the possibility of magma having reached higher up in the crust. Some of the earthquake taking place in El Hierro volcano are crustal stress earthquakes. As magma and inflation of El Hierro volcano is changing the stress in the crust close to it. The

Based on the data from last years events, the magma now is up to 5 km depth in the crust. That magma is for the moment not moving. It is just staying where it and cooling. That might change without warning if something changes inside El Hierro volcano. It is impossible to predict such event with any manner of accuracy. This magma is most likely going to stay where it is and cool off for the next few centuries (this is a different magma sill that is not creating so much earthquakes at the moment). The current magma injection is going to start an eruption in my opinion. It is just question of when and where. It is not a question of “if” in my opinion (non-professional opinion). Update: There are two or three magma sill in El Hierro volcano at present time. Not all of them are going to erupt. Current magma sill that is forming now is however going to erupt in my opinion. That sill formation has been creating earthquakes and inflation during the past two weeks. I know this sounds to be contradicting it self. But the situation in El Hierro volcano is a lot more complex then it seems.

I believe this location to the most likely place for an eruption. More or less. But there is also a risk of magma going somewhere unexpected. As is the risk with all volcanoes that erupt in the same manner as El Hierro volcano.

Inflation has also been sharp following this earthquakes activity. With some areas reporting up to 120mm inflation during short period of time. This is common for volcanoes like El Hierro volcano. Some of this inflation areas might erupt in a fissure vent eruption. When and where are in this case impossible to predict until an eruption actually starts. This types of eruptions are normally not dangerous unless they are close to human habitat. This fissure vents might however be large in length, from several meters in length and up to several km long.

It is hard to know what happens next when it comes to volcano, any volcano that is. What happens in a volcano is poorly understood by everyone. So what happens next in El Hierro volcano is anyone guess. But I find it to be good advice for people living on the Island of El Hierro to stay alert for sudden change in El Hierro volcano behavior.

Earthquake swarm in Katla volcano today (24.06.2012)

Earthquake swarm started in Katla volcano at 13:33 UTC. This earthquake swarm lasted until 14:26 UTC (24 June, 2012). Most of the earthquakes in this swarm where small. Less them magnitude ML1.0 in size. The largest earthquakes did have magnitude of ML1.3 and ML2.0. No harmonic tremor did take place during this earthquake swarm. However, harmonic tremor data from IMO suggests a lot of hydro-thermal activity under Mýrdalsjökull glacier. This might result in small glacier floods coming from Mýrdalsjökull glacier in hours to days time. There is also a good chance that new earthquake swarm starts in Katla volcano at any time. Since there has been pattern of repeated earthquakes swarms in Katla volcano for several weeks now.

It is hard to know for sure what happens next in Katla volcano. But I am sure this activity is currently taking place is going to continue. This does however not say anything about possibility of an eruption in Katla volcano. That possibility remains unclear, as earthquake activity does not mean that an eruption is imminent. For the moment, there are just earthquake swarms taking place in Katla volcano. But that can change without warning. Until then less speculation on what is taking place in Katla volcano is best (in the news media anyway).
