Heavy earthquake activity in TFZ

At the moment there is heavy earthquake activity taking place in TFZ. With earthquakes taking place every second. Strong earthquakes taking place every 2 to 10 minutes. One earthquake has at least reached the magnitude 5.0 and more earthquake with that magnitude is currently taking place on TFZ.

This earthquake activity can be monitored live (5. min, delay) on my geophone network web page here. I am going to post more information when I have more details.

Update 1: According to USGS the largest earthquake had the magnitude of M4.8. I do not know if this is reviewed data or not. USGS data can be viewed here.

Earthquake swarm between in Denmark and Sweden

Today (18.09.2012) at small earthquake swarm started in northern Denanmark, with the fault line extending upwards Sweden. The reason for earthquakes in this area is old fault lines. Along with the fact the Alps pressure the crust in Denmark (from what I did read long time ago). There is also glacier rebound taking place in Denmark and Sweden, along with Norway and Finland. The largest earthquakes in this swarm have had magnitude of ML2.4 and ML2.3. Both with depth of 1 km. But that might also be subject to change.

The ML2.3 earthquake that took place at 17:04 UTC. Copyright of this image belongs to EMSC.

The last earthquake that took place in this area was at 17:04 UTC. Since then no new earthquake have taken place. There might be some earthquakes later. But I find it unlikely to happen. But it hard to know for sure. But this is continental crust. So it moves slowly, when it moves at all in when it comes to earthquakes or other such changes. More earthquakes from this earthquake swarm can be found on EMSC web site.

Magnitude 4.4 earthquake between Denmark and Sweden

This morning there was a magnitude 4.4 earthquake between Denmark and Sweden. This earthquake was felt in Denmark and Sweden. No damage did take place during this earthquake, best to my knowledge. I did not record this earthquake, as I am currently moving to a new place in Denmark. But based on static I should record next earthquake that happens in or close to Denmark in about 2 to 3 years time. More information about this earthquake can be found on EMSC web page here.

It is hard to know for sure if there are going to be any aftershocks following this event. This might just be one-off earthquake. But I would not rule out aftershocks in next few days with the magnitude of ML2.0 – ML4.0. But this are intra-plate earthquake. They are not connected with any fault zone as such. But continental plates have fault zones on there own. This fault zones sometimes move and make a earthquake in the process.
