This is the largest earthquake in this volcano for a long time now and it is worth noting that \u00d6r\u00e6faj\u00f6kull volcano normally doesn&#8217;t have any earthquake activity. This suggests that something might be up if it doesn&#8217;t start to quiet down in next few years. Earthquake activity in \u00d6r\u00e6faj\u00f6kull volcano is not high as can be seen in <a href=\"http:\/\/jardvis.hi.is\/sites\/jardvis.hi.is\/files\/Pdf_skjol\/Jokull58_pdf\/jokull58-jakobsdottir.pdf\" target=\"_blank\">this<\/a> science paper that covers the years 1994 &#8211; 2007 in earthquake activity in Iceland.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/icelandgeology.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/06\/170613_2000.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/icelandgeology.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/06\/170613_2000.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"540\" height=\"596\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-6883\" srcset=\"https:\/\/icelandgeology.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/06\/170613_2000.png 540w, https:\/\/icelandgeology.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/06\/170613_2000-272x300.png 272w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 540px) 100vw, 540px\" \/><\/a><br \/>\nEarthquake activity in \u00d6r\u00e6faj\u00f6kull volcano (to the south on this image). Some of the activity might be glacier quakes due to summer heat or rain. <em>Copyright of this image belongs to Icelandic Met Office.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Tectonic settings in this area don&#8217;t allow for a lot of crustal-tension earthquakes and that suggests that the source of current earthquake activity in \u00d6r\u00e6faj\u00f6kull volcano can be explained by magma movements. If this is going to end in a eruption remains to be seen.
