{"id":5940,"date":"2015-12-20T18:46:55","date_gmt":"2015-12-20T18:46:55","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/icelandgeology.net\/?p=5940"},"modified":"2015-12-20T19:41:52","modified_gmt":"2015-12-20T19:41:52","slug":"earthquake-activity-in-bardarbunga-volcano-3","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/icelandgeology.net\/?p=5940","title":{"rendered":"Earthquake activity in B\u00e1r\u00f0arbunga volcano"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Last night (20-December-2015) a earthquake activity took place in <a href=\"http:\/\/volcano.si.edu\/volcano.cfm?vn=373030\" target=\"_blank\">B\u00e1r\u00f0arbunga<\/a> volcano. Largest earthquake in this short earthquake swarm had the magnitude of 3,5 and the second largest earthquake had the magnitude of 3,1. This earthquake activity is shallow and above above 10 km depth and it appears to be result of magma activity in north-eastern part of B\u00e1r\u00f0arbunga volcano caldera. The earthquakes that took place appear to be long period volcano earthquakes (details can be found <a href=\"http:\/\/kiska.giseis.alaska.edu\/input\/sanchez\/volcseis.html\" target=\"_blank\">here<\/a>, under b-type earthquake).<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/icelandgeology.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/12\/151220_1720.png\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-5941\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/icelandgeology.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/12\/151220_1720.png\" alt=\"151220_1720\" width=\"540\" height=\"596\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-5941\" srcset=\"https:\/\/icelandgeology.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/12\/151220_1720.png 540w, https:\/\/icelandgeology.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/12\/151220_1720-272x300.png 272w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 540px) 100vw, 540px\" \/><\/a><br \/>\nEarthquake activity in B\u00e1r\u00f0arbunga volcano. <em>Copyright of this image belongs to Iceland Met Office.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>There clearly is something going on in B\u00e1r\u00f0arbunga volcano, it is already known that inflation is taking place in B\u00e1r\u00f0arbunga volcano after the eruption in Holuhraun ended in February-2015. Along with increase in dyke intrusions this clearly suggest that magma pressure is increasing inside B\u00e1r\u00f0arbunga volcano. What worries me is not the risk of large eruption in B\u00e1r\u00f0arbunga volcano. The risk in my view is at the moment risk of small eruption taking place, if a small eruption takes place under a glacier it is going to mean glacier flood. Size depends on the eruption size, duration and other factors. <strong>Currently there are no signs of imminent eruption<\/strong>, but that might change without warning.
