{"id":5820,"date":"2015-09-12T00:13:56","date_gmt":"2015-09-12T00:13:56","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/icelandgeology.net\/?p=5820"},"modified":"2015-09-12T00:28:32","modified_gmt":"2015-09-12T00:28:32","slug":"something-is-going-on-in-hamarinn-bardarbunga-and-tungafellsjokull-volcanoes","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/icelandgeology.net\/?p=5820","title":{"rendered":"Something is going on in Hamarinn (B\u00e1r\u00f0arbunga) and Tungnafellsj\u00f6kull volcanoes"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Today (11-September-2015) an earthquake swarm started in Hamarinn volcano (no GVP profile, see <a href=\"http:\/\/volcano.si.edu\/volcano.cfm?vn=373030\" target=\"_blank\">B\u00e1r\u00f0arbunga<\/a> volcano). This is a volcano that is inside B\u00e1r\u00f0arbunga volcano fissure swarm and might be connected to it, that connection is unclear, but historical data suggests that once B\u00e1r\u00f0arbunga volcano gets erupting sometimes Hamarinn volcano does too. There is a similar pattern in <a href=\"http:\/\/volcano.si.edu\/volcano.cfm?vn=373010\" target=\"_blank\">Gr\u00edmsfjall<\/a> volcano and \u00de\u00f3r\u00f0arhyrna volcano (no GVP profile) as an another example.<\/p>\n<p>Current sequence of earthquakes in Hamarinn volcano started with a small earthquake at 22,5 km depth. Few shallower earthquakes happened before that event, those earthquakes however might be connected to changes in hydrothermal systems in the volcano, rather then something else. The deep earthquake that took place started a series of smaller earthquakes at shallower depth, suggesting that pressure is already high inside the volcano, how close it might be to erupting is impossible to know, but the clues that I&#8217;m not seeing do not look good. This might die out, but I think the chance of that are small. Last eruption in Hamarinn volcano took place in July-2011, I wrote about it <a href=\"http:\/\/icelandgeology.net\/?p=1181\" target=\"_blank\">here<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/icelandgeology.net\/?p=1190\" target=\"_blank\">here<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/icelandgeology.net\/?p=1195\" target=\"_blank\">here<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/icelandgeology.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/09\/150911_2215.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/icelandgeology.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/09\/150911_2215.png\" alt=\"150911_2215\" width=\"540\" height=\"596\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-5821\" srcset=\"https:\/\/icelandgeology.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/09\/150911_2215.png 540w, https:\/\/icelandgeology.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/09\/150911_2215-272x300.png 272w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 540px) 100vw, 540px\" \/><\/a><br \/>\nCurrent area of activity in Hamarinn volcano. I also noted that on this image a harmonic tremor spike can be seen on the green band. It does not appear visible on the red and blue bands. I don&#8217;t know why that is. Earthquake activity appears clearly on it (spikes). <em>Copyright of this image belongs to Iceland Met Office.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><strong>Activity in Tungafellsj\u00f6kull volcano<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>There has been interesting earthquake activity in <a href=\"http:\/\/volcano.si.edu\/volcano.cfm?vn=373040\" target=\"_blank\">Tungafellsj\u00f6kull<\/a> volcano today. Today earthquake swarm started with the depth of 12,3 km and it mostly stayed there. Suggesting that magma dyke injections are taking place in the volcano at the moment. If and when this might lead to an eruption is impossible to know. Magma might be at shallower depth already due to high activity during the eruption in B\u00e1r\u00f0arbunga volcano.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/icelandgeology.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/09\/150911_2215.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/icelandgeology.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/09\/150911_2215.png\" alt=\"150911_2215\" width=\"540\" height=\"596\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-5821\" srcset=\"https:\/\/icelandgeology.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/09\/150911_2215.png 540w, https:\/\/icelandgeology.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/09\/150911_2215-272x300.png 272w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 540px) 100vw, 540px\" \/><\/a><br \/>\nThe earthquake activity in Tungafellsj\u00f6kull volcano, it&#8217;s located north of both B\u00e1r\u00f0arbunga and Hamarinn volcano (NE of Hamarinn). Current activity is a small cluster of earthquakes in north-east part of Tungafellsj\u00f6kull volcano. <em>Copyright of this image belongs to Iceland Met Office.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Largest earthquake in this swarm so far had the magnitude of 1,9. It was also the shallowest earthquake in this swarm. So far no change on the surface of Tungnafellsj\u00f6kull volcano, meaning that no hydrothermal vents have appeared so far.
