{"id":5030,"date":"2014-09-22T16:47:31","date_gmt":"2014-09-22T14:47:31","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/icelandgeology.net\/?p=5030"},"modified":"2014-09-23T01:13:35","modified_gmt":"2014-09-22T23:13:35","slug":"bardarbunga-volcano-daily-update-22-september-2014","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/icelandgeology.net\/?p=5030","title":{"rendered":"B\u00e1r\u00f0arbunga volcano daily update 22-September-2014"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>This information is going to get outdated <em>quickly<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Current status in B\u00e1r\u00f0arbunga volcano at 14:47 UTC<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>The largest earthquake so far is magnitude 4,8 in <a href=\"http:\/\/www.volcano.si.edu\/volcano.cfm?vn=373030\" target=\"_blank\">B\u00e1r\u00f0arbunga<\/a> caldera. There is however continued activity in B\u00e1r\u00f0arbunga volcano caldera so this number is going to change as the day goes on.<\/li>\n<li>The eruption in Holuhraun does not show any signs of ending any time soon. The lava field is now around 37 square km in size. It is growing in size every hour. There is no sign of less production of lava coming from the active craters in Holuhraun. The lava field is not getting longer, it is getting wider instead. Since the lava does not have energy to get any further then it already has.<\/li>\n<li>There is continued risk of new eruptions in Holuhraun and south of it, including under the glacier.<\/li>\n<li>According to \u00c1rmann H\u00f6skuldsson geologist at University of Iceland both <a href=\"http:\/\/www.volcano.si.edu\/volcano.cfm?vn=372020\" target=\"_blank\">Eyjafjallaj\u00f6kull<\/a> volcano eruption in 2010 (information<a href=\"tps:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/2010_eruptions_of_Eyjafjallaj\u00f6kull\" target=\"_blank\"> here<\/a>, Wikipedia) and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.volcano.si.edu\/volcano.cfm?vn=373010\" target=\"_blank\">Gr\u00edmsfjall<\/a> volcano eruption in 2011 (information <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/2011_eruption_of_Gr%C3%ADmsv%C3%B6tn\" target=\"_blank\">here<\/a>, Wikipedia) were smaller then current eruption in B\u00e1r\u00f0arbunga volcano and connected events.<\/li>\n<li>It is expected that eruption is going to start in B\u00e1r\u00f0arbunga volcano caldera. When is not known.<\/li>\n<li>B\u00e1r\u00f0arbunga volcano caldera continues to subside at the same rate as before, that rate is currently 50cm\/day.<\/li>\n<li>More magma is flowing into B\u00e1r\u00f0arbunga volcano from depth (more than 10 km deep source). It is clear that current eruption and earthquake activity in B\u00e1r\u00f0arbunga volcano is going to continue for <em>months<\/em> at shortest. This might go on for <em>years <\/em>at the longest. With minor breaks as often happen in fissure eruptions.<\/li>\n<li>On 1-October-2014 the eruption in Holuhraun has been ongoing for one month.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Current status in B\u00e1r\u00f0arbunga volcano at 20:24 UTC<br \/>\n<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>There has not been any major changes since earlier today. At 13:36 UTC a magnitude 4,7 earthquake took place. Other earthquakes so have been smaller.<\/li>\n<li>There was (or is) a quiet period for the past few hours. This might be because more magma is flowing into the magma chamber of B\u00e1r\u00f0arbunga volcano. Increasing the pressure and at the same time creating fewer earthquakes. That might change at any time without warning.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Update at 23:13 UTC<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>The lava field at Holuhraun is now 0.5 km\u00b3. It is now the second largest lava field in Iceland during the past 150 years. Only Hekla lava field from 1947 is larger at the moment, it is 0.8 km\u00b3 in size.
