{"id":4871,"date":"2014-08-30T19:49:34","date_gmt":"2014-08-30T17:49:34","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/icelandgeology.net\/?p=4871"},"modified":"2014-08-30T21:01:27","modified_gmt":"2014-08-30T19:01:27","slug":"update-on-askja-and-bardarbunga-volcanoes-at-1749-utc","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/icelandgeology.net\/?p=4871","title":{"rendered":"Update on Askja and B\u00e1r\u00f0arbunga volcanoes at 17:49 UTC"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>This information is going to get outdated <em>quickly<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>This is the weekend edition of my regular updates on activity in <a href=\"http:\/\/www.volcano.si.edu\/volcano.cfm?vn=373030\" target=\"_blank\">B\u00e1r\u00f0arbunga<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.volcano.si.edu\/volcano.cfm?vn=373060\" target=\"_blank\">Askja<\/a> volcano. They are shorter and <strong>might not<\/strong> contain all the information on what is going on.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Current status on Askja volcano<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Askja continues to be on Yellow alert.<\/li>\n<li>Dyke does not seems to have any progress moving into Askja volcano system. Reason why that is are unknown.<\/li>\n<li>Earthquake activity appears to have dropped in Askja for the past 24 hour period.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Current status on B\u00e1r\u00f0arbunga volcano<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Largest earthquake for the past 24 hours is a magnitude 5,4 earthquake that took place at 07:03 UTC. It took place in south-west part of B\u00e1r\u00f0arbunga volcano. It did appear clearly on my geophones and they can be viewed <a href=\"http:\/\/www.jonfr.com\/webicorders\/tremoren.htm\" target=\"_blank\">here<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li>Eruption has been confirmed to have taken place on 23-August-2014. That eruption did not manage to break the trough the glacier since it is 400 to 600 meters thick were the eruption took place.<\/li>\n<li>Most earthquake activity is taking place on 15 km long line in the Dyke, starting at the location were the eruption took place and goes some 15 km south from that location. Dyke does not seems to be moving north at the moment.<\/li>\n<li>Eruption is now considered more likely in B\u00e1r\u00f0arbunga volcano it self than before.<\/li>\n<li>Last large eruption that took place in B\u00e1r\u00f0arbunga volcano was in 1717. According to Global Volcanism Program that eruption was an VEI 3 eruption.<\/li>\n<li>Eruption can happen in slopes of B\u00e1r\u00f0arbunga volcano, also in its caldera. The glacier in the caldera is up to 800 meters thick (+- 100 meters).<\/li>\n<li>Earthquake activity is stable, with over 1000 to 2000 earthquakes recorded daily so far.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>GPS data<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Icelandic Met Office has released GPS data and it can be viewed <a href=\"http:\/\/en.vedur.is\/earthquakes-and-volcanism\/gps-measurements\/bardarbunga\/\" target=\"_blank\">here<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Storm warning<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>There is going to be a storm in Iceland on Sunday. I do however need to take a little break since I&#8217;ve been working and writing about B\u00e1r\u00f0arbunga for the past two weeks. So updates on weekends are going to be shorter and less detailed than on working days (Monday &#8211; Fridays).
